Mental Health Clinician – Children, Youth, and Family Services

Position Description

Provides evidence based counseling and related clinical services to children, youth, and families. Responsibilities include diagnosing and treating patients, leading sessions with individuals and groups, and referring clients to specialists as needed. Ultimately, you will work directly with patients to counsel them in treating various mental health disorders in order to lead a healthier lifestyle.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

1) Establish positive, trusting rapport with patients

2) Diagnose and treat mental health disorders

3) Create individualized treatment plans according to patient needs and circumstances

4) Meet with patients regularly to provide counseling, treatment and adjust treatment plans as necessary

5) Conduct ongoing assessments of patient progress

6) Involve and advise family members when appropriate

7) Provide mental health co-occurring assessments, develop and implement treatment plans, provide case management referral and coordination with other mental health professionals and treatment providers or community partner agencies.

8) Have a fundamental understanding of the DSM 5, or its successor, psychiatric disorders and demonstrate a working knowledge of the various theoretical models of psychotherapy, behavioral counseling and other Evidenced Based Practices.

9) Conduct co-occurring assessments and provide individual, group, and family therapies.

10) Provide clinically appropriate therapy based on mental health co-occurring assessment and treatment plans.

11) Conduct treatment plan reviews throughout the duration of therapy.

12) Complete and maintain documentation according to federal and state guidelines.

13) Able to apply clinical judgment, ethics and accountability.

14) Ability to collaborate with healthcare providers for continuity of care.

15) Communicate with referral sources and other appropriate parties regarding patients’ progress.

16) Must demonstrate the ability to handle stressful and crisis situations tactfully and appropriately.

17) Develop and coordinate an individualized discharge plan for the patient by utilizing treatment team and chart information to determine the patient aftercare needs. Identify and assess family or community resources available to the patient.

18) Must be able to exercise discretion and independent judgement in all areas of job performance including adherence to appropriate professional boundaries and strict confidentiality practices in regard to client activities and documentation.

19) Ability to work with all ages.

20) Deliver services primarily in outpatient office setting or where necessary to meet client needs.

21) Participate in on-call rotation and perform risk assessment with individuals who are in crisis.

22) Participate in planning and analysis regarding future design for one or more aspects of BBHW behavioral health services.

23) Work collaboratively with social service agencies, schools, hospitals, courts and other community resources.

24) Adhere to BBHW policies, participate in all BBHW required supervision and training.

25) Complete all required BBHW documentation, correspondence, reports and other materials; and, maintain records as required.

26) Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Experience or Licensure

1) Master’s degree or higher in one of the major fields of human services.

2) Eligibility for licensure/certification in a recognized field of behavioral health in South Dakota.

3) Two (2) years of professional experience in provision of public or private social work, clinical services, behavioral health, family services, substance abuse and/or other human services.

4) Ability to maintain information within HIPAA guidelines and agency policies.

5) Ability to perform and prioritize multiple functions and tasks.

6) Strong communication, organizational, and planning skills.

7) Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients.

8) Ability to work as part of a team.

9) Excellent computer skills/proficient in computer applications, specifically MS Office.

10) Strong organizational skills.

11) May need to use personal vehicle for work-related tasks.

12) Must have valid driver’s license, reliable operating transportation, and proof of current auto insurance.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $45,000.00 - $59,000.00 per year
