GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Ophthalmic Technician will report to the Clinic Nurse Manager and the direction of the Optometrist/Ophthamalogist. This position will perform patient-care tasks for patients of all ages, gender, cultures, and backgrounds in the clinic setting. In addition, laboratory and office duties are performed as needed.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Greet and escort patients to exam rooms for medical Provider visit.
  2. Obtain and document in Meditech system subjective and objective data.
  3. Communicate to Provider or registered nurse information about the patients; any problems, needs or changes in patient’s status.
  4. Attend team huddles with nurse and Physician about daily activities and potential problems.
  5. Prepare exam rooms with equipment and supplies required for the visit and assist health care team with exams and procedures.
  6. Provide basic education; explain lab/diagnostic test(s) to the patient including proper preparation and provide appropriate handouts to patients appropriate to their age, learning considerations and identified needs.
  7. Conduct pre-testing and special testing for the following equipment and instruments:
  • Pre-Testing I—auto refraction, lensometry, tonometry and topography OCTs.
  • Pre-Testing II—preliminary case history including current medical conditions, visual acuities, dial in, phoropter, color vision and drop instillation.
  1. Special Testing— visual fields, fundus photography, slit lamp photography, optec vision screener.
  2. Utilize universal precautions, assist in obtaining specimens from patients and forwards to laboratory as applicable.
  3. Assist Ophthalmologist with laser treatment and eye injections.
  4. Assist other members of the team to include, but not limited to, answering incoming phone calls, preparing charts and other office tasks required to keep the clinic operating smoothly.
  5. Assist in pre-chart planning for incoming patients.
  6. Assist physician in group visits with pre-visit vitals and other needs during group meetings.
  7. Act in a professional manner reflecting the mission of the medical center.
  8. Demonstrate an ability to remain calm and professional during periods of peak activity.
  9. Communicate professionally, clearly, concisely and accurately to all team members.
  10. Participate in the training and orientation and education of new employees.
  11. Maintain a clean and safe environment and participates in maintaining equipment and supplies in exam rooms and nursing station areas.
  12. Demonstrate an ongoing understanding of Corporate Compliance issues.
  13. Support and abide by the medical center policies, procedures and standards of care.
  14. Participate in planning changes and improvements for the clinic.
  15. Participate in the team approach in Process and Quality improvements for the clinic as requested by clinic supervisor.
  16. Embrace and support Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives.
  17. All other duties as assigned.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

  1. Must be able to accurately perform refraction.
  2. Demonstrate consistently and support service excellence according to Broadlawns Medical Center Employee Expectations for excellence 100% of the time.
  3. Demonstrate ability to consistently meet manager requests, committee responsibilities, and Performance Improvement data collection as outlined by supervisor 95% of the time.
  4. Demonstrate commitment to career growth and competence. This will be demonstrated by the completion and documentation of all competencies, clinic specific skills, HealthStream, annual in-services, corporate compliance 95% of the defined time.
  5. Demonstrate consistent ability to meet Personal Performance Summary Standards.
  6. Attends unit/ staff meetings 75% of the time.
  7. Demonstrate compliance with patient confidentiality 100% of the time.
  8. Demonstrate competence in specific computer applications.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. COA certification
  2. Ability to refract
  3. An Associate degree from a recognized program of optometric technology within 6 months of hire, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  4. Basic knowledge of Ocular anatomy.
  5. Ability to successfully pass Basic Life Support Certification (Health Care Provider), if not already current with certification, prior to providing care independently.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. One year experience as optometric technician.
  2. Computer experience.
  3. Bilingual.
