    POSITION TITLE: DIRECTOR OF TRANSPORTATION
    DEPARTMENT: SUPERVISORY STAFF (AFSCME #818)
    REPORTS TO: DIRECTOR OF FINANCE AND OPERATIONS
    SUMMARY: The Transportation Director is responsible for directing and coordinating the daily operations of student transportation, including district motor pool to assure safe and efficient pupil transportation. This position requires strong proven abilities in organization, leadership and human relationships.
    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Monitors daily transportation operations to assure that work is performed efficiently and in accordance with appropriate regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
    • Oversees all aspects of the daily bus operations. Provides direction to Transportation Department office and bus vendors and staff. Facilitates staff meetings to provide annual in-service and address operational issues.
    • Develops, monitors and tracks budget for transportation department as well as certifies payment of all transportation related invoices. Follow Transportation RFP & assigns routes. Supervises all aspects of the crossing guard program including interaction with vendor & Bristol Police Department.
    • Resolves or delegates daily operational problems and emergencies while coordinating with the Director of Finance and Operations on complex problems.
    • Establishes and maintains positive customer relationships with parents, schools, and departments. Collaborates with a variety of personnel from other departments, districts, state agencies and organizations relating to pupil transportation.
    • Coordinates and provides input in the district transportation services, routing and scheduling efforts.
    • Manages, coordinates and tracks District Cell Phone Program with Vendor. Facilitates replacement orders and new devices.
    • Coordinates with local municipalities and agencies to improve student walkways, road conditions and other safety related issues in the district.
    • Meets regularly with Director of Finance and Operations to provide information on operational issues, including changes in pupil transportation regulations and guidelines. Assist and/or coordinates with the development of policies and procedures, system upgrades and implementations, departmental staffing changes.
    • Comply with all district policies and the Code of Professional Conduct.
    • Performs purchasing duties in compliance with district policy and procedures.
    • Participates as an effective member of the district management team.
    • Continue professional growth, formulate goals, seek feedback, apply new skills, and participate as a team member with colleagues.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.
    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
    • Knowledge of the principles and practices of pupil transportation planning, scheduling and route development.
    • Demonstrated leadership of the integration of special needs students into a school setting.
    • Skills and ability in organization, time management, task prioritization and record keeping.
    • Skills demonstrating high level of integrity, commitment, and work ethic.
    • Ability to plan, organize and oversee assigned work programs, including monitoring work schedules and work performance.
    • Ability to work well under pressure and use sound judgement, including appropriate handling of confidential matters.
    • Ability to analyze complex situations and synthesize diverse information.
    • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with other professionals in a team setting.
    • Ability to interact positively and effectively with, students, staff, and administrators.
    • Ability to use computers and/or electronic equipment to fulfill job functions.
    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
    Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees, planning, assigning, and directing work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems.
    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS, EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

    High School diploma/GED certificate.
    Specialized training in area of responsibility.
    Advanced training desirable.
    Extensive experience in area of responsibility.
    LANGUAGE SKILLS:
    Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups, employees and the general public.
    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
    Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions and percentages. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and concrete variables.
    COMPUTER SKILLS:
    Advanced knowledge and experience with standard hardware and software applications. Ability to use computer for E-mail, word processing, accounting, databases and presentations and transportation routing. Fluency in MUNIS, VersaTrans, PowerSchool & WebSmart software programs.
    REASONING ABILITY:
    Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
    OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
    Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the community. Ability to speak clearly and concisely in verbal communication. Ability to convey ideas clearly and concisely in written format. Ability to perform duties with awareness of, and to adhere to, all district requirements and Board of Education Policies.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk and hear. The employee is required to stand and walk. Some occasional lifting or moving is required which normally would not exceed fifty (50) pounds and work in an environment with exposure to petroleum fumes and work occasionally outside. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Some driving is required. Frequent writing is required. Some extended hours and multiple demands from several people are frequently required of the employee.
