Bristol-Myers Squibb is Hiring a Scientist, Molecular Biology, Functional Genomics and Sequencing Research Operations Management Near San Diego, CA

We are seeking a highly skilled Scientist with a strong background in functional genomics screens, molecular biology, and next-generation sequencing (NGS) to join our early discovery team at Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS). The ideal candidate will demonstrate innovative approaches to experimental design and possess a strong experience in CRISPR-based screens in 2D and 3D cell models, as well as proficiency in executing multi-omics single-cell workflows. As part of this role, the candidate is also expected to operate Illumina sequencing platforms, track NGS collaborative research inquiries and organize all supporting information for NGS projects to deliver knowledge to collaborators. The candidate will interact with other teams such as IT, data managers, bioinformatics and biology Scientists from various research groups. The scope of work will involve communicating with internal project stakeholders as well as external NGS vendors to be able to maintain oversight of all project activities, identify any issues in NGS operations and ensure that these are resolved promptly.

This role involves both hands-on laboratory work and strategic leadership. The successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to engage with diverse cross-functional scientific teams. The candidate will be in the unique position to engage with diverse scientific teams, utilizing enabling genomics tool to elucidate complex biological questions, and contribute to groundbreaking drug discoveries that directly impact patient health. The position is for employment on a contract basis for 6 months.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out CRISPR/Cas9 functional genomics assays (e.g., Perturb-seq, CRISPR screens, etc.) in organoid cancer models to unravel mechanism of action and enable novel targets validation
  • Perform cell culture for functional assays related to drug response in cell and organoid models
  • Ability to conduct a wide variety of molecular biology and NGS-based techniques with minimal supervision and with an exceptional attention to details
  • Lab operations include RNA/DNA extraction/purification, NGS library preparation & QC
  • Work independently and/or in collaboration with other team members on novel NGS workflows
  • Generate, organize, and maintain meticulous records of all conducted experiments
  • Track NGS collaborative research inquiries, projects, action items, deadlines and organize all supporting information for NGS projects
  • Coordinate sample transfer through data delivery for experiments performed in-house and/or via external organizations
  • Review extraction, sequencing run and data quality control stats and documenting them for future reference
  • Excellent time management and organizational skill with attention to details
  • Self-motivated, strong communication skills, both written and oral. Strong ability to work in a fast-paced environment is essential. Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a demonstrated ability for creative thinking and problem solving.
  • Maintain laboratory notebook and prepare written data reports, figures, and presentations of the research in the form of progress reports, manuscripts, and/or internal and external research presentations

Skills/Knowledge preferred

  • PhD or MS degree with 4 years of professional experience in molecular biology (preferred), biology, biotechnology, or biochemistry
  • Extensive understanding of NGS technologies (e.g., DNA-seq, RNA-Seq, and single-cell mRNA-Seq), with a track record of utilizing such assays and an ability to troubleshoot the sequencing process end-to-end to improve NGS library quality
  • Strong knowledge of CRISPR tools and their integration with NGS technologies
  • Demonstrated expertise in molecular biology techniques, including DNA/RNA extraction & purification, NGS library preparation & QC, PCR, qPCR, cloning, etc.
  • Experience with single-cell sequencing workflows, such as 10x Genomics
  • Strong understanding of theory behind techniques, proficient reasoning skills in experimental design and optimizing wet lab techniques, coupled with an exceptional attention to details
  • Understanding of Illumina sequencing data and ability to interpret secondary data analysis metrics
  • Competence with standard cell isolation, cell culture, compound treatment, FACS
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Commit to quality by rigorous and constant evaluation of own work
  • Proficiency with MS Office suite, and ability to analyze and present genomic data
  • Strong planning and organizational skills and comfort with systems such as Confluence, JIRA, or SharePoint systems
