POSITION TITLE: Laboratory Technician I, Medical Assisting (part-time; 40 weeks per year)

DEPARTMENT: Health Sciences

REPORTS TO: Dean of Health Sciences or designee

STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The Laboratory Technician I, Medical Assisting works in Bristol Community College's Medical Assisting Laboratory and is responsible for supporting Medical Assisting students through laboratory preparation and clean-up, among other duties. The Laboratory Technician will also participate in ongoing department and training/professional development meetings to help ensure delivery of quality academic services.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare supplies for routine laboratory operation using laboratory apparatus and testing equipment.
  • Follow standardized procedures to provide data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease, or for research or scientific experiments.
  • Prepare various solutions following standard laboratory formulae and procedures.
  • Help students collect human specimens, such as blood and urine for use in laboratory tests and analyses, as needed.
  • Operate laboratory equipment, such as autoclaves for laboratory tests and research/scientific experiments.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and safety of laboratory, according to established standards and procedures, utilizing procedures such as disposing of contaminants, washing and sterilizing glassware and equipment, and inspecting temperature control equipment.
  • Give instructions to students, faculty and staff concerning laboratory techniques and use of equipment.
  • Maintain records on tests performed, test results, methods, materials, and procedures used, as well as inventory records.
  • Prepare test results and quality control reports in order to provide data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease, or for research or scientific experiments.
  • Maintain and order stock of laboratory supplies and equipment; maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment; notify appropriate personnel of mechanical problems; contact outside vendors for equipment repair.
  • Use appropriate safety equipment in all clinic operations.
  • Attend department meetings, seminars, and workshops.
  • Demonstrate a sense of professionalism and consistently reflect Bristol's core values while interacting with members of the Bristol community.
  • Focus on the Commonwealth's Equity Agenda by applying related best practices throughout all job functions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in laboratory work in a recognized clinical, medical, hospital, chemical, water quality, public health, biological, bacteriological, marine sciences or materials testing laboratory, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. An Associate degree or higher with a major in medical technology, chemistry, bacteriology, food science and technology, environmental science, chemical or environmental engineering, wastewater technology, oceanography or the biological sciences may be substituted for the required experience.

Il. The successful completion of one year of full-time, or equivalent pan-time, education toward a degree at a recognized medical or dental school may be substituted for the required experience.

Ill. The successful completion of training in a recognized school or hospital course or an American Medical Association (AMA) approved training program for laboratory technicians or medical technologists may be substituted for the required experience.

IV. Registration as a medical technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, the International Society for Clinical Laboratory Technicians or American Medical Technologists or as a bacteriologist by the National Registry of Microbiologists may be substituted for the required experience.

ADDITIONAL REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory safety procedures, including hazardous waste collection and storage.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow and give verbal and written instructions.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in verbal expression and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • The ability to work effectively with a diverse student body, faculty, and staff.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one of the following current Medical Assistant Certifications - CMA (AAMA), CCMA (NHA), RMA (ASMT), or NCMA (NCCT).
  • Minimum of one year of experience as a medical assistant in an ambulatory care setting.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly with Excel.
  • Ability to speak a language in addition to English

Additional Information:

POSITION STATUS: This is a part-time, non-unit, non-benefited, 40 weeks per year, up to 10 hours per week position. This position may require day, evening, or weekend hours based on need.
