POSITION TITLE: Accountant V

DEPARTMENT: General Accounting, Administration and Finance

PRIMARY LOCATION: Fall River

REPORTS TO: Assistant Comptroller

STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Responsible for maintaining, updating, and reconciling the general ledger; preparing and posting account transactions to the finance ledger and state reporting system; complying with fiscal policies and procedures; assisting with the annual budget and financial reporting, processing and reporting of trust funds, grants and student financial aid, grants and contracts; as well as developing compliance policies. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain computerized general ledger, chart of accounts, and accounting records.
  • Prepare, monitor, and report part-time and full-time payroll projections. 
  • Assist in the development, monitoring, and reporting of the college operating budget.
  • Prepare and post journal entries to the finance ledger.
  • Prepare monthly account analysis and reconciliation, including reconciliation of bank statements to the finance ledger.
  • Assist the Grants Accounting with federal, state, private grants and contracts. 
  • Assist the Financial Aid Accountant as backup to Financial Aid disbursements.
  • Prepare and post fiscal activity to the state financial system (MMARS).
  • Assist in the development and Maintenace of the college's Risk Assessment Plan and Fraud Waste and Abuse Policy accreditation reviews. 
  • Prepare reconciliation of appropriated and non-appropriated funds activity on the MMARS system to internal ledgers. 
  • Initiate bank transfers and draw down federal and state funds.
  • Provide fiscal and Banner finance (college accounting system) training to end-users.
  • Assist in the development of fiscal policy and procedures and maintains and updates General Accounting manuals.
  • Work with other areas of the college to ensure a spirit of college-wide collaboration, civility, and teamwork.
  • Provide flexible, responsive, and high-quality customer service to all whom we service, be it students, community, or staff.
  • Demonstrate a sense of professionalism and consistently reflect Bristol's core values while interacting with members of the Bristol community.

Job Requirements:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicant must have at least (A) five years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in accounting or auditing, of which at least (B) three years must have been in a supervisory, administrative, or managerial capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and substitutions below. 

Substitutions:

  1. An associate degree with a major in accounting, business administration or business management may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience. 
  2. A bachelor's degree with a major in accounting, business administration or business management may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience. 
  3. A graduate degree with a major in accounting, business administration or business management may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience and one year of the required (B) experience. 

*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

NOTE: Educational substitutions will only be permitted for a maximum of one year of the required (B) experience.

ADDITIONAL REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with computerized financial accounting systems. 
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 applications.
  • Experience and advance knowledge of Microsoft Office Excel and Access.
  • Strong analytical and reconciling skills.
  • Ability to function independently with minimum direct supervision.
  • Ability to analyze and determine the applicability of accounting data, draw conclusions, and make appropriate recommendations and reporting statements.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as financial reports, accounts, and ledgers.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Proficiency in both oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to exhibit and promote values of integrity, trust, confidence, loyalty, respect, and unity of self and others.
  • The ability to work effectively with a diverse student body, faculty, and staff.
  • Reliable transportation in order to travel to and from meetings, trainings, or campus and community locations as required. 
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of financial analysis.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of financial management.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Substantial experience in higher education field. 
  • Experience working with the SCT Banner System.
  • Familiarity with the state accounting system (MMARS).
  • Ability to communicate in a language in addition to English.

Additional Information:

POSITION STATUS: This is a full-time, state funded, AFSCME, unit-classified position with benefits.

WORK SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm

SALARY: AFSCME Unit 01, Grade 22, Step 1 $67,486.12 annually. Appointments from outside the bargaining unit begin at Step 1.
