Bright Star Schools is Hiring a 24-25 Valor Academy High School Dean of Restorative Practices Near Los Angeles, CA

Position Title: Dean of Restorative Practices

Reports to: Assistant Principal

FLSA Status: Exempt, Full-time, 12-month position


OVERVIEW

The Dean of Restorative Practices (DRP) leads the school's restorative practices programming, progressive discipline, and implementation of positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) to create a safe, inclusive, and joyful environment that promotes campus safety in all ways. The DRP will implement, facilitate, and maintain the school’s behavior management systems to ensure all students, staff, and families understand their role in supporting a safe campus culture. The DRP is also responsible for communicating with appropriate campus, community, and district stakeholders including the Senior Director of Restorative Practices in a timely and responsive manner. The DRP will work in partnership with the Assistant Principal and Principal to support liaising with the Los Angeles Unified School District in reporting high-level disciplinary and other required documentation.

JOB DUTIES
(will include, but not limited to the following)

  • Collaborate with the Principal and Assistant Principal to implement and manage a campus-wide behavior management framework (inclusive of Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 supports) that fosters a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all students and staff
  • Collaborate with the site and district leadership to implement and facilitate school culture initiatives based on data, site-specific goals, and Bright Star School’s overall mission and vision for students
  • Create systems that support the utilization of restorative practices and PBIS structures to establish, maintain, and repair relationships between student-to-student; student-to-staff; staff-to families
  • Manage student investigations and resolution process in observance of state and federal law, and district expectations
  • Connect students and families to internal and external resources for mental, socio-emotional, and physical health
  • Support the implementation of restorative practices and classroom culture to adjust systems, procedures, and policies to ensure school safety
  • Collaborate with Principals and Assistant Principals to build teacher and staff capacity to establish and maintain healthy relationships through the implementation of Tier 1 classroom systems and supports
  • Attend all org-wide PD and meetings related to Culture, Coaching, and Restorative Practices
  • Collaborate with co-leaders to analyze disciplinary and behavioral data to guide decision-making and identify students in need of support
  • Complete, communicate, and manage compliance-based documentation process for all disciplinary incidents and corresponding interventions in a timely manner
  • Collaborate with Grade Level Teams in the MTSS/SSPT process to support student behavior/academic goals and to provide resources and support to meet student and family needs
  • Follow Bright Star Schools’ toileting policies and protocols if working with early elementary students
  • Manage a tiered system of interventions to support teachers in addressing student behavior
  • Manage supervision of student arrival, breaks, transitions, lunch, and dismissal


SKILLS and QUALITIES

  • Deep belief that all students can succeed in achieving their individual educational goals
  • Experience working with students from underrepresented and disenfranchised communities
  • Deep understanding of Restorative Practices and ability to facilitate training to students, staff, and faculty
  • Deep understanding of equity and the developmental needs of adolescents
  • Knowledge and understanding of trauma-informed practices; ability to respond to trauma and crisis appropriately
  • Excellent oral, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Desire to continuously grow own skills through participating in professional development and training opportunities
  • Ability to develop and build relationships with students and their families
  • Ability to look at school on a macro level, and implement programs and activities as needed to boost school culture and a positive atmosphere
  • Working knowledge of Google online platforms (including Gmail, sheets, and docs) plus an aptitude for quickly learning and mastering other online platforms
  • Ability to create and facilitate relevant, ongoing PD for staff and faculty


QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA in an education-related field
  • Fluency in Spanish or Korean (highly desired)
  • [Preferred] 2 years of teaching/ counseling/student support experience
  • Restorative Practices certification (highly desired)
  • Strong oral and written communication skills including advocacy skills
  • Ability to connect and build relationships with students and their families
  • Experience using data management systems
  • Experience working with youth from historically underserved communities
  • Experience working in a fast-moving environment; crisis management
