POSITION: Assistant Principal of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment

SUPERVISES: Supervises staff members and programs as the Principal may designate to include, but not limited to Lead Teachers, Co-Teachers, Teaching Assistants, Interventionists, Coaches and Coordinators.

JOB GOAL:  To provide leadership in the on-going development, and improvement of the Elementary instructional, curricular, and professional development program.

Overview of the Role

The Assistant Principal of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment participates actively in the life of the school to forward best practices and innovations to enhance student learning. The Assistant Principal partners to develop a curricular program in support of the school’s mission and teaching philosophy. The Assistant Principal will be responsible for both horizontal coordination and vertical scope and sequence of the school’s curriculum and continuous research and data collection to ensure the school remains on track with its academic goals. This role is also responsible for ensuring curricular implementation remains at its highest quality and will work annually with teachers on their informal and formal evaluation processes in support of achieving professional growth goals. The Assistant Principal of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment will be willing to learn about Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in order to support the school’s work that merge best practices in elementary education with UDL. This is a 12 month position. 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaching and Learning

  • Responsible for the development, implementation, assessment and evaluation of grades 1-5 instructional programs to make sure they are aligned, with a concentrated focus in the following areas:
    • Curriculum Guides
    • Pacing Guides
    • Assessment and testing programs
    • Vertical and Horizontal Alignment
    • Staff and Professional Development
    • Intervention Programs
    • Research-based Best Practices Methodologies and Strategies
    • Differentiated Instruction
  • Develops in collaboration with the principal, the formulation of the vision, goals, objectives, and specific strategies for the instructional programs and school-wide plans. 
  • Interprets the curriculum and its philosophy to the Board, administration, staff and public. 
  • Coordinates the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the schoolwide plans.
  • Completes and submits required reports assigned by the Principal and or Head of School.
  • Works with the grade level and subject teams in the schools on instructional improvements and the use of appropriate data sources and collection. 
  • Revises pacing guides, curriculum guides, instructional strategies, and assessments in collaboration with teachers and administrators. 
  • Reviews and implements assessments to provide teachers with useful data about the pacing, implementation, and evaluation of the curriculum. 
  • Assists in the facilitation and development, implementation, review and evaluation of curriculum and instructional strategies related to special programs. 
  • Provides school leadership to ensure the understanding and promotion of the educational goals and objectives of the school. 
  •  Observes and evaluates the in-class performance of all teachers’ instructional practices and needs for professional development.
  • Administers programs of staff development activities for school based personnel in line with data and curriculum needs. 
  • Assumes the responsibility for reviewing and evaluating results of all testing programs and other measures used by the schools and shares information with administrators and teachers. 
  • Supervises the selection and adoption of new textbooks, instructional materials, methods and programs under the direction of the Principal. 

Staff Oversight and Development

  • Participates in the recruitment, screening, hiring, training, and assigning of instructional personnel. 
  •  Coordinates the onboarding process for elementary school staff. 
  • Assists new teachers with staff development and in their classrooms. 
  • Under the direction of the principal, coordinates, develops, supports and collaborates professional development for instructional personnel. 
  • Observes and evaluates school instructional staff. 
  • Works with teacher committees in organizing and coordinating grade level and departmental meetings in order to ensure horizontal and vertical continuity and articulation of the instructional program. 
  • Coordinates and co-facilitates the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) process.
  • Assists the Principal with the overall instructional program.
  • Performs other tasks and assumes other responsibilities assigned by the Principal or Head of School.

  • Maintains liaison and active participation with educational leaders in curriculum and instruction at regional, state, and national levels.

The Ideal Candidate will possess: 

  • Embraces serving students with Special Education needs and English language learners.
  • Demonstrated track record of improving outcomes for students
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, lead, and collaborate with adults from a diverse range of perspectives and backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and keep strong relationships with a diverse community of students, families and staff.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to think strategically, translate thoughts to action, and follow-through with all details.
  • Have a minimum of two years of school leadership experience as a Instructional Coach or Assistant Principal, as well as at least five years of classroom teaching experience.
  • Content expertise in a core subject area (Math, Reading & Writing, Science or Social Studies) a plus.
  • Master’s degree required; advanced degree preferred in K-12 school administration, curriculum & instruction, education or a related field.

Salary & Benefits

Salary Range: $95,000.00 - $110,000.00

Salary is based on educational level, certification(s), and years of experience. The successful candidate will be contracted yearly. Employment will be renewed according to evaluations and staff interest. Child care and health savings plans, pre-tax deduction for Metro, bike racks and regular staff engagement and wellness activities. Staff lounge and lactation room for nursing mothers. Health benefits (medical & dental), disability insurance, and a retirement plan: 401-(k) with a 4% match or the continuation of the DCPS retirement plan.
