Position: Special Education Coordinator

Reports to: Director of Student Support

Direct reports: Special Education Teachers and other Special Education staff

Big vision for the role: The Special Education (SPED) Coordinator is an integral member of the Bricolage Academy School Leadership Team. The Coordinator works closely with the Director of Student Support and other student support coordinators to support planning, coordinating, supervising, implementing, and evaluating special education services across the school. Additionally, the Coordinator is responsible for promoting inclusionary practices across the school and ensuring significant and measurable academic gains, each year, for students with exceptionalities.

Specifically, the Coordinator is responsible for

Implementation of Curriculum & Delivery of High-Quality Instruction:

  • Collaborates with the Director of Student Support Services and Principal to recruit, select and develop a team of educators

  • Collaborates with instructional leaders to plan/deliver PLC's surrounding inclusive practices

  • Works with SPED staff to develop goals that support student access to the general education curriculum

  • Monitors service delivery of instruction and related services as stipulated on IEPs in both inclusion classes and resource settings

  • Ensures all programs, policies, systems, structures, & routines prioritize safety,inclusivity, equity, & support

  • Researches and coordinates (with the Director of Student Support Services) the selection of instructional/program materials and resources

  • Serve as a resource in identifying appropriate instructional strategies and interventions to improve student achievement for all students with exceptionalities

  • Attends and contributes to regularly scheduled meetings about student achievement, progress and intervention

Coaching and Feedback

  • Facilitates meetings in which special education teachers and support personnel meet to determine and monitor student placement in/growth during teaching of core curriculum

  • Observes SPED staff on a regular basis and provides detailed feedback, both written and oral, formal and informal

  • Works with SPED staff, school administration, and consultants/specialist to provide appropriate training/development for paraprofessionals, parents, students, and additional school staff

  • Ensures parent(s)/guardian(s) are provided frequent updates/feedback regarding student progress and performance and classroom activities

Data Usage

  • Provides and analyzes all relevant achievement and learning data, reports and information to Bricolage staff and community when appropriate

  • Analyzes and utilize formative student and teacher data to guide data-based decision making and enhance instruction and supports

  • Utilizes web-based tools such as FastBridge,Performance Matters, Excel, and other such tools to collect data and monitor student progress

  • Ensures SPED staff creates, organizes and maintains IEP folders (either electronic or paper) for each student on their caseload

  • Collects quality data and collaborates with members of the academic and instructional team(s) for support when needed

Compliance Management

  • Serves as ODR for all IEP meetings

  • Reviews files of students new to the school; assign teacher/case manager

  • Assists SPED teachers/case managers with IEP development, compliance, and monitoring

  • Collaborates with the Director of Student Support Services and the School Principal with the coordination of IEP meetings regarding communication, scheduling, and classroom teacher coverage

  • Maintains shared school wide calendar of Annual, Triennial Review, 30-day Review and Initial Eligibility IEP meetings to monitor timeline compliance

  • Tracks discipline data to ensure that special education discipline procedures are implemented (Manifestation Determination meetings, continuity of SPED services, FAPE)

  • Ensures School Principal, administrators in charge of discipline, and general education teachers have lists of special education students by case manager

Other Responsibilities

  • Participate in Bricolage team activities, including trainings and staff meetings

  • Attend professional development conferences and learning groups, as needed

  • Communicate effectively and in a professional manner with school administrators, school staff and parents on a regular basis regarding program activities.

  • Develop rapport and build relationships with Bricolage instructional staff, support staff and parents

Qualifications and key competencies

  • Strong belief in the Bricolage Academy mission, vision and core values

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • Two (2) years minimum special education teaching experience

  • Two (2) years minimum special education leadership experience

  • Highly organized with exceptional detail orientation and sense of personal responsibility

  • In-depth knowledge of local, state and federal policies (i.e. IDEA, Bulletin 1508, Bulletin 1706)

  • Self-starter who enjoys learning new things and utilizing a variety of resources

  • Proficiency with technology in an office setting including word processing and spreadsheets

  • Comfortable and excited by working in a dynamic environment

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Demonstrated success and outcomes in a fast-paced and ambiguous environment
