PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENINGS: Brenau University will conduct criminal background checks on all persons being considered for initial employment. In some circumstances, an FBI fingerprint report may be necessary to satisfy the requirement. Once employed, employees must hold and continue to maintain a favorable criminal history background. Random background checks are performed. Credit checks may be performed on candidates/employees who are selected for a position that regularly engages in handling credit cards or other company monies. A Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) may be performed during the hiring process, or as part of a random check. MVR checks are required to meet insurance requirements for those employees operating a university vehicle or participating in any driving activity on behalf of Brenau University, (including operating a golf cart, rented vehicle or one’s personal vehicle). Employees who travel must be at least 21 years of age, have a valid Georgia driver’s license, and good driving record. All employees who operate university vehicles, who are employed in a sensitive position, or who travel regularly as part of their job responsibilities may be subject to post-hire drug screening and random drug-screening. All employees are subject to reasonable suspicion drug screening..

Position Summary:

This half-time faculty member will teach on-ground and online chemistry lectures and labs on the Gainesville campus as a member of the Department of Math and Science. Possible courses for instruction include a one-semester health science chemistry survey, general chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry with all applicable laboratory sections for each course. Our department services undergraduate students with Biology, Health Science, and Exercise Science majors. Founded in 1878 and ranked by The Chronicle of Higher Education as a “Great College To Work For”, Brenau University is a supportive academic environment with strong community ties in Gainesville, Georgia. The projected start date for this position is August 1, 2024.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • M.Sc. in Chemistry (Ph.D. preferred)

  • Experience in teaching chemistry lectures and labs at the college level

  • Experience in teaching chemistry for non-majors

  • Evidence of strong written and oral communication skills

  • Evidence of quality instructional methods, curriculum development, and distance learning

  • Willingness to work in a collaborative environment

Responsibilities:

  • Teach a course load of 12 credit hours per year (lectures and labs)

  • Use Canvas LMS for course content and supplemental resources

  • Continually revise course content and teaching methods in accordance with student needs and feedback

  • Work in coordination with Laboratory Manager to maintain and supervise chemistry labs, including compliance with federal regulations

  • Remain current in discipline and teaching through professional development

  • Work in a professional and collegial manner with faculty, staff, administration, and students

  • Maintain regular office hours

  • Committee work as assigned

  • May include summer teaching opportunities

  • Other duties as assigned

Work Hours:

20 hours per week. Generally, Monday-Friday, with hours adjusted to meet the needs of the department.

Environmental and Working Conditions / Physical Demands and Aptitudes:

Mostly sedentary work. Work is performed in an office and classroom environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment related to teaching. Prolonged periods sitting and standing. Worker is required to have close visual acuity to grade papers, viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading. General sensory capacities must be sufficient to perform routine duties as outlined above, including telephone and computer use. Strong cognitive skills as required for organization and judgment as outlined in duties. Emotional stability with capacity to manage periodic stressful interactions. Excellent attention to detail. Labs take place in a lab setting in compliance with OSHA and EPA standards. Some lifting and or carrying objects weighing 25 lbs may be required.
