Mental Health Recovery Specialist Job Description

Position: Mental Health Recovery Specialist

Reports to: Program Director

Location: Topeka, KS

Status: Full-time, hourly/non-exempt

Summary

The Lotus House, is a rehabilitative community dedicated to supporting people recovering from serious mental illness.

Candidates for this position should possess an understanding of serious mental illness and a belief in strengths-based approaches to engagement and recovery. Central to this position is the engagement of members in all aspects of clubhouse operations. Recovery specialists have a generalist role and therefore share responsibilities for employment, housing, evening / weekend, wellness, and social programming. Candidates must have a passion for excellence and thrive in a community setting where relationship-building is a priority and multi-tasking is the norm. Recovery specialists are assigned to a unit (Administration or Wellness), which carries with it specific responsibilities of that unit.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Understand and operate in accordance with the Clubhouse philosophy and policy as outlined in the Clubhouse International model. http://clubhouse-intl.org/
  • Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment for clubhouse members.
  • Assist with the development of appropriate linkages with community agencies, clinical services, government departments and other relevant programs.
  • Work closely with other colleagues, members and community agencies to develop services that are responsive to the needs of members.
  • Provide leadership and direction to members in the program by working side by side with members to run the non-profit organization.
  • Act as a role model for members through appropriate attitudes, behaviour and dress standards within the Clubhouse work and social setting.
  • Assist with the training of new staff and students.
  • Within the transitional employment (TE) program; train, support and work alongside members and employers the community, provide job placement and coverage services for 2 to 3 TE positions in the Topeka Community.
  • Assist members to learn skills and gain confidence that will assist in a range of life skills
  • In keeping with the philosophy of the Clubhouse, all the staff are expected to be involved in all areas of the running of the Clubhouse.
  • Flexibility of hours will be required as the position will involve some weekend, public holiday and evening work.
  • Provide presentations to community organizations on the Clubhouse model.
  • Participate in a two or three- week colleague training program on the Clubhouse model.
  • Assist members in effectively accessing all Clubhouse services, including housing, employment, education, assistance, wellness and socialization opportunities.
  • Utilize Clubhouse model techniques effectively (meaningful member engagement, authentic relationships, operating by consensus).
  • Complete required administrative work in a timely manner including time sheets, mileage logs, service logs, vocational logs, etc.
  • Attend and participate in morning meetings, policy meetings, and unit planning meetings.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities as they arise or assigned.
  • Assist with the development of relationships with local foundations, donors, employers, colleges, universities and public schools as needed
  • Perform other duties related to the operation of the Clubhouse as requested by the Program Director.

Experience Required:

  • Graduated from an accredited institution with a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relatable experience. Preference will be given to those will a degree in the human services field.
  • Highly developed communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Possess a current valid Driver’s License in the United States with current driver’s insurance.
  • Experience working directly with people with severe mental illness, or familiarity with serious mental illness
  • Willing to drive a 15-passanger van
  • Must be willing to become CPR/First Aid certified within 90 days of hire
  • Must be willing to obtain a food handler permit within 90 days of hire.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Outlook

ADA Specifications: Physical demands are generally minimal. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit and talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands/arms. Mental requirements are generally demanding. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to problem solve, make decisions, interpret and organize data, and engage members effectively. Requires a high degree of concentration and the ability to work under stress and in a fast-paced environment.
