The Outreach Advocate is responsible for providing timely and effective advocacy services to survivors on an emergency and/or ongoing basis, and for coordinating and facilitating street and community outreach efforts in collaboration with community partnerships and outreach affiliations.
RESPONSIBILITIES
· Provide ongoing advocacy and direct services to all assigned clients, including providing compassionate support for survivors over the phone or in person, listening to their needs and goals, and helping them connect with ways to meet those needs and goals.
· Provide crisis intervention to clients as needed, applying empathy and conflict de-escalation skills in all crisis situations, and following through after the crisis to ensure client needs have been met.
· Document and maintain survivors’ confidential information into the Apricot database system.
· Research and locate resources for clients, including eligibility requirements for accessing resources; develop and maintain productive relationships with community resources, social service providers, and other client referral sources; and maintain a current list of all available resources to which clients may be referred.
· Always conduct street outreach efforts in partnership with at least one other person, being consistently mindful of the safety risks involved; coordinate with other staff, volunteers, and contractors to ensure accompaniment at all times.
· Coordinate with volunteer groups to assist in street outreach, including regularly communicating with the person handling volunteers to ensure all volunteer hours are recorded in database, all participants are trained and have signed releases, etc.
· Monitor organization and inventory of street outreach materials and communicate needs to supervisor and/or Executive Director.
· Regularly debrief and otherwise communicate with supervisor about progress, challenges, solutions, and self-care.
· Be knowledgeable about Breaking Free policies, procedures, practices, and values and be willing and able to hold self and others accountable to them.
· Assist other staff however needed to address a client crisis or lack of programming staff.
· Serve as a mentor and role model for survivors and staff.
· Maintain confidentiality of all client information.
· §Other miscellaneous duties as necessary or assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
· Comprehensive and thorough knowledge of women’s issues, particularly domestic and sexual violence, prostitution, poverty, and addiction.
· Strong interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to speak directly and respectfully in all interactions; the ability to listen with compassion and without judgment; the ability to read, assess, and interpret non-verbal cues; and the ability to de-escalate conflict.
· Comprehensive and thorough knowledge of community resources.
· The demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive, professional relationships.
· Proficient and comfortable with computers and other forms of technology, especially Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) and Apricot database system.
· Strong administrative and organizational skills with excellent attention to detail.
· Strong ability to multi-task and prioritize in a continuously changing, fast-paced environment.
· Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends for the purpose of assisting during special events/meetings.
· Must have valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and active car insurance.
EDUCATION
No formal degree or higher education is required, although any educational credits or degrees will weigh favorably in the assessment of required skills and qualifications.
