General Summary:

To assist the Detention Manager in providing effective supervision of an assigned work shift within the departments Detention Facility.

Essential Duties:

Other duties may be assigned. Work a flexible schedule based on the needs of the institution. Transports residents to court as needed. Searches residents to court as needed. Supervise residents in accordance with procedures. Make arrests and perform restraint techniques. Work a flexible schedule that will involve working weekends, evenings or nights. Work with Administration to enhance the professionalism of the detention center Become well versed in the use of the Family Code and Juvenile Justice System. Direct the intake and orientation process of juvenile offenders into the detention center. Screen juvenile referrals from the local police agencies to accept or deny based on the merits of the offense. Dispense prescription and over the counter medications. Counsel with the juveniles and contact mental health professionals as needed. Maintain 80 hours biannually of approved training to maintain JPO and JSO certification. Follow established policies, procedures and practices of the department. Abide by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department Code of Ethics. Maintain security and confidentiality of all case information, files and chronos as required by the Texas Family Code. Facilitates and participates in departmental programs. Supervision

Received: Detention Manager

Given: Supervise Juvenile Supervision Officers and detained juveniles in accordance with County and Department procedures as well as State standards. This includes training of new officers and staff, conducting performance reviews, and recommending personnel actions. Conduct regular staff meetings regarding policies, procedures, problem solving, program planning and in-service training. Review and approve time sheets and time off requests.

Education

Required: Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or a related field, plus one (1) year of responsible, paid experience in a juvenile correctional work or social services.

Required: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Must be 21 years of age, or older, and be able to meet criteria for certification as a Juvenile Probation Officer and Juvenile Supervision Officer through TJJD.

Required: Valid Texas driver’s license with appropriate liability auto insurance coverage ( Driver’s license requirements must be met within 30 days if employee recently moved from another state). Must be able to meet all criteria for certification as a probation officer through TJJD which includes a certified copy of transcript with written proof of accreditation of your college or university as well as written proof ( on employer’s letterhead) of required work experience from previous employer (which should include dates of employment and description of job duties and performance), non-disqualifying criminal history/sex offender registration background check.

Typical: Duties require daily standing, walking, sitting, talking and listening; frequent use of hands and/or fingers to grasp, handle, pick-up, pinch, type or feel; frequent reaching with hands or arms and lifting of objects over 100 pounds; close vision, distance vision, ability to distinguish color, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Must possess basic computer knowledge and competence. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Must have physical ability to make arrests and perform restraint techniques.

Work Environment

Typical: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is constantly required to perform multiple tasks simultaneously, to work under time pressures to meet deadlines and to work closely with others as part of a team; the employee is frequently required to do tedious exacting work. Worker is subject to physical hazards from traffic; serious hazard and infection from exposure to communicable disease; physical harm as the result of confrontation.
