Brazoria County is Hiring a Mechanic - West Columbia Near Angleton, TX

Under general supervision, performs preventive maintenance and repairs to County vehicles, heavy equipment and specialized equipment. Reports To: Shop foreman / Superintendent
Shift: Mon-Thu, 7:00 am – 5:30 pm, and additional hours as job requiresESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. This is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and duties performed by incumbents of this class; employees may be assigned duties which are not listed below; reasonable accommodations will be made as required. Employees are required to be in attendance and prepared to begin work at their assigned work location on the specified days and hours. The job description does not constitute an employment agreement and is subject to change at any time by the employer. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Repairs and maintains electric, diesel, and gasoline industrial trucks and equipment for the County.
  • Test drives all equipment.
  • Reads job orders; performs mechanical diagnostics and repairs.
  • Installs new ignition systems, alignments, changes or recharges batteries, replace transmissions and other parts; overhauls gas or diesel engines.
  • Examine protective guards, loose bolts, specified safety devices and makes adjustments.
  • Lubricates moving parts and accompanies driver of repaired truck to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Fabricates special lifting or towing attachments, hydraulic systems, shields, or other devices according to blueprints or schematic drawings.
Attends and participates in meetings and conferences as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Experience and Training Guidelines:
High school diploma or equivalent; AND three years of automotive and equipment repair experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.
 
Knowledge of:
  • Principles and practices of vehicle and heavy equipment maintenance and repair methods and techniques.
  • Principles and practices of the repair and maintenance of mechanical, electrical and computerized systems within vehicles and equipment.
  • Troubleshooting techniques and methods. 
  • Principles and practices of fabrication.
  • Principles and practices of record keeping.
  • Safety practices and procedures. 
  • Department policies, procedures and regulations covering specific areas of assignment. 
 
Skill in:
  • Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with managers, supervisors, employees, state officials, vendors, contractors, suppliers and the general public. 
  • Using initiative, discretion and decision making within established procedures, guidelines and rules.
  • Defining problems, collecting data, establishing facts and drawing valid conclusions.
  • Using testing and measuring equipment.
  • Using power and hand tools.
  • Operating motorized equipment.
  • Reading and understanding technical manuals, schematics, wiring diagrams, technical service bulletins and parts catalogs.
  • Performing mathematical calculations with skill and accuracy.
  • Providing effective customer service.
  • Operating a personal computer and various software applications.
 
LICENSE & CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Valid Texas State Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with endorsements. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed both in an office, shop and outdoor work environment. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, high, precarious places, and fumes or airborne particles. May be exposed to dangerous machinery, extreme weather conditions, hazardous chemicals and physical harm. May be required to climb ladders. May be required to work in confined spaces. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate in the office setting, but may be very loud in outdoor situations. May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 100 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
