Description

Shipping and Receiving Job Descriptions

 1. Receiving Duties:

  • Inspect incoming shipments to verify their contents and compare them to purchase orders or other documents.
  • Unload, unpack, and sort incoming materials, ensuring they are in good condition.
  • Record and document received items and update inventory systems or databases.
  • Check for accuracy and completeness of shipments, including quantities and quality of products.
  • Identify and report any discrepancies, damages, or shortages to the appropriate parties.
  • Organize received materials and place them in designated storage areas.

 2. Shipping Duties:

  • Review shipping orders or requests to determine the items to be shipped and their destinations.
  • Pack, label, and prepare goods for shipping according to company standards and shipping requirements.
  • Generate shipping documents, such as bills of lading or shipping labels, and ensure they are accurate and complete.
  • Arrange transportation and schedule pickups with carriers or freight forwarders.
  • Track and monitor the status of outgoing shipments and communicate any delays or issues to relevant parties.
  • Ensure all necessary customs or regulatory documentation is completed for international shipments.

 3. Inventory Management:

  • Maintain accurate inventory records and conduct regular inventory counts or audits.
  • Monitor stock levels and initiate reorder requests to avoid shortages or overstocking.
  • Organize and optimize warehouse storage, ensuring efficient use of space and easy access to items.
  • Coordinate with other departments, such as procurement or sales, to ensure accurate stock levels and timely deliveries.
  • Identify and implement improvements in inventory control processes to minimize errors and improve efficiency.

 4. Equipment and Safety:

  • Operate forklifts, pallet jacks, or other material handling equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines to prevent accidents, injuries, or damage to goods.
  • Perform routine maintenance on equipment and report any malfunctions or issues for repairs.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, including the warehouse or shipping and receiving areas.

 5. Communication and Documentation:

  • Collaborate with internal teams, such as purchasing, production, or customer service, to ensure smooth operations and timely deliveries.
  • Communicate with suppliers, carriers, or customers regarding shipment details, tracking information, or any issues that arise.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records, including shipping logs, inventory databases, and other relevant documentation.
  • Provide excellent customer service and resolve any shipping or receiving-related inquiries or concerns.

Requirements

  1. Physical Stamina: Ability to stand and remain on your feet for extended periods, often throughout the entire shift.
  2. Lifting and Carrying: Capable of lifting and carrying packages, boxes, or other items weighing up to 50 pounds safely and without assistance.
  3. Bending and Stooping: Willingness and ability to bend, stoop, squat, and kneel repeatedly throughout the workday to pick up items, inspect shipments, or perform other tasks close to the ground.
  4. Manual Handling: Proficient in manually handling various shapes and sizes of objects, including lifting from ground level, shelves, or pallets, and carrying them to designated areas.
  5. Repetitive Motion: Comfortable with performing repetitive motions such as reaching, grasping, and moving items from one location to another continuously.
  6. Safety Awareness: Maintain awareness of proper lifting techniques and ergonomic principles to prevent injuries while lifting, bending, or stooping.
  7. Balance and Coordination: Possess good balance and coordination to navigate safely in a busy shipping and receiving environment, especially while carrying heavy or bulky items.
  8. Teamwork and Communication: Collaborate effectively with coworkers to coordinate lifting and moving tasks, communicate about potential hazards, and ensure a safe working environment for everyone.
  9. Adherence to Procedures: Follow established safety protocols and procedures for lifting, bending, and stooping to minimize the risk of accidents or injuries.
  10. Pace and Efficiency: Work efficiently while on your feet, managing tasks such as lifting, bending, and stooping in a timely manner to meet productivity goals and shipping deadlines.
