Bozeman City is Hiring a Systems Administrator II Near Professional Building, MT

The City of Bozeman is now accepting applications for a Systems Administrator II who will administer assigned local area network and wide area networks including daily network maintenance, management, and upgrade of , switches, routers, firewalls, VoIP servers, system back-ups, assist with the development and implementation of disaster recovery and incident response plans, and prepare user instructions for network use.

Work Week: Typically Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm
Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)
  • Administers assigned local area network and wide area networks, including daily network maintenance, management and upgrade of the servers, development and design of the local and wide area network, system back-ups, development and implementation of disaster recovery and fault tolerance plans, and preparing user instructions for network use;
  • Establishes and maintains Internet and Intranet connectivity for City-wide operations, including the connectivity with the County and the Joint Dispatch Center and firewall system between Internet and Intranet;
  • Serves as the security officer for LAN users as required;
  • Administers and maintains multi-tiered antivirus system and related security applications;
  • Tests network software and hardware alterations, additions, and/or upgrades as necessary;
  • Administers and supports city-wide Voice over IP Telephony System;
  • Provides training, demonstrations and technical support to personnel in the operation of the network system and personal computers, including resolving software application problems, handling corrupt files, and testing and making appropriate recommendations for new software acquisitions;
  • Assembles, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs personal computers, including identifying and correcting viruses, installing new software and upgrading computers as necessary;
  • Recommends technology initiatives related to the City’s personal computer network, including researching new technology, conferring with vendors regarding available technology, and making appropriate recommendations for system and application program designs and upgrades;
  • Writes specifications for software and hardware acquisitions as necessary;
  • Researches and compiles a variety of information materials from outside sources, summarizes the information, and prepares related reports accordingly;
  • Maintains current and accurate written documentation of the computer operations;
  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on the principles, practices and new developments in assigned work areas;
  • Responds to questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;
  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
  • Performs other duties consistent with the role and function of this classification.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, or related field; and
  • Considerable (3 to 5 years) experience in voice, video, networking and data systems design and maintenance; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work. 
  • Comprehensive knowledge of advanced principles and techniques of personal computer uses and applications, electronic mail, word processing, data processing operations and systems, spreadsheet programs, database programs, and networking systems;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the practices, principles, and language utilized in Cisco operating systems;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the operating characteristics, capabilities, capacities, and limitations of computer systems and related peripheral equipment;
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and methods of training and instructing others in appropriate computer use and operation;
  • Thorough knowledge of Internet Protocol (IP) and its capabilities related to voice, video, and data transactions.
  • Some knowledge of database management systems, GIS system equipment, mid-range applications and AS400 operation;
  • Ability to effectively troubleshoot and repair information technology equipment computer problems;
  • Ability to provide effective training and instruction to others, and to communicate with novice, intermediate, and advanced users of personal computers;
  • Ability to effectively manage the daily operations of a PC computer network;
  • Ability to effectively design, assemble, and maintain LAN and WAN;
  • Ability to analyze, interpret and develop solutions in a timely manner;
  • Ability to visualize abstract concepts and effectively communicate them to others;
  • Ability to utilize critical thinking and logic in dealing with systems problems;
  • Ability to exercise sound, independent judgment and work with minimal supervision;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information and data;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with assigned supervisors , other City employees, elected officials, vendors, and the general public;
  • Ability to interpret and apply Federal, State, and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language;
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures and instructions;
  • Ability to write effective technical reports, flowcharts, topological data and other related data;
  • Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations;
  • Ability to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks;
  • Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;
  • Ability to obtain and maintain relevant certifications as required;
  • Integrity, ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks;
  • Consistently performs assignments in accordance with the City’s Core Values of Integrity, Leadership, Service and Teamwork.
  • Valid Montana Class D Driver’s License (or equivalent); and
  • Offers for employment are conditional upon successful completion of a criminal background check, NCIC/CJIN and Local Records Check, a thorough reference check, driver’s license status and record check, and a credit history.
The following certifications are preferred, but not required:
  • Microsoft Certifications
  • CCNA or other Cisco Certifications
