The City of Bozeman is now accepting applications for an experienced Building Inspector IV who will perform detailed and technical inspections (building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical) of buildings and sites under development during all phases of construction. This great opportunity also provides enrollment in an established retirement system with significant employer contribution (9.07%), generous vacation and sick time accruals, 8 weeks of paid parental leave, and excellent medical/dental/vision benefits.Bargaining Unit: Montana Federation of Public EmployeesFair Labor Standards Act Status: Non-exemptWork Week: Monday through Friday, 7:00am to 4:00pmExamples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)Plans and organizes the inspection workload and determines inspection staff assignments;Trains, leads, directs, and, motivates staff as assigned by the Chief Building Official;Serves as a department trainer for new Building Inspectors;Performs detailed and technical combined (building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical) inspections of buildings and sites under development during all phases of construction to monitor for code compliance including maintaining an accurate log of inspections performed;Provides information to contractors and builders on the nature, requirements and purposes for existing municipal codes, and maintains an accurate log of all inspections performed;Examines drawings during development and assists contractors in meeting occupancy and code requirements;Conducts final inspections, maintaining the authority to postpone building/project completion based on the adherence to related codes;Provides information to building designers, project owners, and contractors with regard to project design, structural calculations and coordination with other public agencies and seeks to promote a process of cooperation between contractors, builders, and building owners;Coordinates and investigates complaints of code violations;Reviews periodicals, trade journals, and engineering reports to research new products and materials to insure they are installed based on manufacturers’ installation instructions;Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions;Travel to and perform on-site inspections to verify compliance with approved plans and regulations as adopted by the jurisdiction;Compose field reports of corrective actions to architects, engineers and applicants in order to remedy deficiencies noted during plan review and/or inspections;Serves as an information resource for all interested members of the public in code applications, permitting processes and all related activities;Perform periodic and follow-up inspections of new and existing buildings, structures, and installations;Research problems, analyze various approaches and recommend solutions;Attend meetings and conduct on-site evaluations of buildings to ensure a minimum of fire and life safety compliance provisions are met;Though continuing education, maintain expertise in current code and advancement in technology, materials, and methods of building and fire life safety standards;Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;Maintains files of reports;\Uses the Division’s technology including mobile systems to track and report on field inspections and correction notices; Ensures department’s compliance with safety policies and regulations;May serve as acting Building Official in the absence of the Chief Building Official;Performs other duties consistent with the role and function of this classification.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
High School Diploma or GED; andAt least two years of experience in building construction, plans examining, or building inspection; and At least five years of experience as a Building Inspector; and Possession of each of the following ICC or equivalent certifications: Residential Building Inspector (B1);Residential Mechanical Inspector (M1);Residential Electrical Inspector (E1);Commercial Building Inspector (B2);Commercial Mechanical Inspector (M2);Commercial Electrical Inspector (E2);IAPMO Plumbing Inspector.Any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Valid Driver's License and/or must obtain valid Montana Driver's license within 60 days of employment;Must maintain required certifications throughout employment as required;Offers for employment are conditional upon satisfactory response to appropriate post conditional offer process.
