Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Virginia is Hiring a Summer Reading Teacher Near Madison, VA

Position: Summer Reading Teacher
Location: Madison Club
Position Status: Part-time
Exempt Status: Non-exempt
Compensation Type: Hourly
Salary Range: $22-$24 per hour
Position Summary:
The Summer Reading Teacher will implement reading activities for Club members ages 6-9 at the Madison Club, help collect assessment data for members, collaborate in planning with the Summer Reading Specialist, assist in evaluation of program effectiveness, implement reading programs through age appropriate activities, and assist with supervision of Club members.
Position Description:
  • Implement designed reading lessons for age groups 6-9
  • Support and supervise small groups of students as they participate in independent activities
  • Provide differentiated opportunities for students to access the material
  • Engage students in meaningful learning experiences
  • Assess and report student performance in accordance with policies developed for the Summer Reading Program
  • Assist in upholding and enforcing program rules
  • Treat and respond to all students with dignity and respect
  • Work to establish and maintain effective communication with students, parents, and Club colleagues concerning both the academic and behavioral progress of students
  • Collaborate professionally with others in assessing and improving the program as well as maintain cooperative professional relationships with others
  • Assign volunteers to engage in meaningful activities with students
  • Maintain records as outlined by administrative regulations
  • Perform associated duties as assigned, related to the implementation of the summer reading and learning program
  • Create and supports opportunities, systems, and expectations that promote an organizational culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Create, foster, and maintain a respectful and inclusive environment for all people
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Familiarity in effective reading practices required
  • Reading instruction experience with youth ages 6-9 years old
  • Experiencing managing others
  • Strong communication skills both orally and written
  • Demonstrated ability to work with young people, parents, and community members
  • Ability to supervise a minimum of 15 youth members and maintain safe environments for youth required
  • Experience directing large groups of youth in organized activities preferred
  • Ability to motivate youth and staff in a consistent and constructive manner while maintaining a positive environment
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check required
  • Ability to acquire CPR and First Aid certification required
Education and Certifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • College degree preferred, education or youth development focus preferred
  • CPR and First Aid certification preferred
  • Valid Driver’s license preferred
Physical Requirements and Work Conditions:
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Exposure to indoor and outdoor work environments
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to be effective in an environment with varying levels of noise throughout the day
  • Ability to maintain both visual and auditory supervision of youth members
