Boys & Girls Club of the Bemidji Area is Hiring an Assistant Garden Manager Near Bemidji, MN

Position is approximately 10-15 hours a week, with seasonal highs an lows. Hours can be flexible, but a successful candidate must have some availability during the school year afternoons between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. (not necessarily every day) and during the weekday daytime during the summer. There may be a period in the winter that position is seasonally not needed.

Job Description:

Prepare Youth for Success

1. Ensure programs, services and activities that prepare youth for success, promoting safety of members & outreach youth and quality in programs at all times. Provide guidance and role modeling to members.

2. Contribute to the planning and implementation of the gardening program by:

· Planning, organizing and implementing a range of program services and activities for consistent Club members, drop in members, outreach youth and visitors;

· Initiating new programs with the approval of the Garden Manager and Unit Director;

· Recommending the development of garden area programs; and

· Promoting and encouraging program participation.

3. Ensure quality improvement by monitoring and evaluating program achievement against target goals, recommending modifications that respond to member needs and interests and participating in programmatic leadership staff meetings.

Health and Safety

1. Ensure a healthy and safe environment, supervising members in program areas.

2. Manage facilities and ensure a productive work environment, maintaining an inventory of all program equipment and supplies in good order. Recommend purchases to Garden Manager, as necessary; working together to control expenditures against garden budget for the garden program and high-tunnel area.

3. Support a healthy garden by actively monitoring the garden’s health and providing necessary proactive and reactive measures to ensure the ongoing success of the garden. This includes; temperature warnings (hot and cold), storm warnings, water levels, biological controls (pests, weeds, fungals, etc). In case of an emergency that occurs when the Assistant Garden Manager is off-duty, the Club expects that the Assistant Garden Manager will secure assistance to minimize the danger to the garden either through themselves or others. All time worked will be compensated at a regular rate of pay.

4. Actively support the entire gardening process from planning to planting, weeding to watering, maintaining produce growth, harvesting, properly preserving produce, assisting in the sale of produce and utilizing produce frequently in nutritious recipes in program settings with youth and independently for youth.

5. Support a year-round gardening by helping to plan, plant, transplant, monitor, water, care for and harvest produce from hydroponic systems.

Program Development and Implementation

1. Be the content expert and provide oversight for all gardening programs, activities, deliverables & expectations surrounding gardening, including seed germination, tending, weeding, watering, fertilizing, harvesting, preparing and preserving. Be a content expert on nutrition and work with and through the Garden Manager and/or Unit Director on supporting the Club’s snack & lunch service as well as nutrition classes. Develop consistent schedule with Garden Manager and Program Leadership for youth programs and also regular schedule for gardening support and maintenance.

2. Update and maintain an operations manual to support sustainability of the gardening program.

3. Engage youth in hydroponic curriculum from ForkFarms throughout the hydroponic process.

4. Steward working relationships year-round with area produce vendors such as farmer’s markets, school districts, grocery stores and restaurants, interfacing youth into the process whenever possible. This stewardship will include both outdoor seasonal produce and year-round hydroponic produce.

5. Assist and/or lead on-site farmer’s markets with youth including all facets of harvesting, weighing, inventorying, pricing, financial controls, selling, public relations, coordination with other Club staff and programs and properly accounting and putting items away after markets.

6. Support resource development and grant team in efforts to generate financial sponsorships and grant applications around gardening. This will include participating in grant writing, providing quotes, pictures, statistics, and produce for stewardship and report purposes. It also includes working with the Garden Manager to submit quality program reports and accurate financial reports for garden related grants on or before their deadlines.

7. Maintain detailed records of output and outcome data, including; daily log of garden activities, rostering number and names of youth who have gardening experiences, pre/post tests, quotes, produce yields, upkeep and maintenance costs, etc.

8. Celebrate gardening with Club members by recognizing annual gardening events such as Farm to School month, national gardening calendar events/days, etc. In coordination with the Garden Manager, plan and implement annual Harvest event for Club members, families and community members.

9. Be an environmental steward, using composting and minimizing produce waste when at all possible.

Supervision

1. Train and manage assigned volunteers; provide ongoing feedback; quarterly & annual reviews; and identify and support development opportunities. This will include coordinating volunteer workdays to 2-4 times yearly to support garden activities.

2. Demonstrate leadership by comprehending and contextualizing our Mission, Values, 5 Key Elements of Impact, and relevant National Youth Outcomes Initiative results.

3. And any other responsibilities per Garden Manager, Unit Director, or Executive Director related to the comprehensive year-round gardening program.

Professional Development

1. Engage in mandatory professional development opportunities that apply to this position at the Club.

2. Attend professional development opportunities as required by specific grant awards.

3. Engage in additional gardening, nutrition and environmental trainings, webinars, etc. as approved by Garden Manager.

4. Learn and use the 5 Key Elements of Impact & Club sponsored guidance and discipline techniques to build assets in youth.

Pay: $16.00 - $19.00 per hour
