Description

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Under the direct supervision and guidance (direct line of sight) of an adult (18 years or older) staff member, implements activities with youth ages 5 -12 years old, in program areas of Education and Career Development, The Arts, Sports Fitness & Recreation, Health & Life Skills, Character & Leadership or Specialized Initiatives.

KEY ROLES:

Safe and Positive Environment

  1. Actively engages with Club members
  2. Maintains an organized, clean, and safe program space
  3. Monitor member use of technology
  4. Monitor member arrival and departure
  5. Active supervision/Zone monitoring during all gym and outdoor play activities
  6. Ensure that Club equipment (play equipment, athletic balls, books, tables, chairs, etc.) is in good working order
  7. Support members in emergency drills/routines
  8. Know and practice safety policies including transitions and bathroom usage
  9. Be aware of surroundings and environment (uninvited guests, unknown vehicles, etc.) to minimize possible harm, hurt or injury
  10. Assure expectations are clear for all Club members
  11. Assure members feel welcomed and valued
  12. Routinely scan program area for safety hazards (cleaning chemicals, exposed electrical equipment, excess water, etc.), and address or report findings
  13. Assist Club members with storage of their personal belongings (book bags, coats, lunch boxes, etc.)

  2. Know the names of Club members, Club members know your name
  3. Acknowledge presence of Club members upon arrival/departure

Opportunities & Expectations

  1. Ensures compliance with BGCT policies & procedures
  2. Attend staff meetings and trainings
  3. Maintains daily contact with team, to determine opportunities and challenges
  4. Assist members with routine clean up throughout program time, and at the end of program time (no trash on the floor, books and games neatly put away, chairs pushed in, and not materials or supplies on the floor)

  • Healthy Behavior Modeling Teaching youth and teens the importance of living an active, healthy lifestyle is a BGCT priority. As a result, all staff is expected to model healthy behavior while working with our Club members.
  • Inclusive Environment BGCT values creating child-friendly environments, where youth and teens of all abilities, races, and ethnicities can be successful and participate. BGCT expects employees to embrace its focus on inclusion of all members.
  • Continuous Learning Building the capacity of staff is central to BGCT. The organization requires all staff to participate in annual professional development opportunities in order to cultivate their skills in the youth development field.
  • Safe Spaces Every staff member shares the responsibility for ensuring BGCT is, and remains, an environment free of sexual, physical, or emotional abuse

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Qualifications


SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

  • 16 -17 years old
  • Good communication/listening skills
  • Ability to mentor and motivate Club members
  • Patience
  • Demonstrate excellent teamwork skills and collaboration

Other Requirements:

  • Acceptable background check (parent/guardian consent to authorize background check)
  • Successfully completion New Employee Orientation & all training requirements
  • Youth Development Assistant will not work independent from the direct supervision (visual proximity) of an adult staff member (staff member 18 years or older)
