Boys and Girls Club of Salem is Hiring a Youth Development Professional - Boys & Girls Club of Salem Near Salem, OR

Job Description - FULL time hours available during summer months only, Part time is year round.

Sign on Bonus: $500 sign on bonus to be paid $250 in your first paycheck and $250 in the first paycheck after 90 days of employment at 20 hours or more per week.

Position Title: Youth Development Professional

Department: Programs

Reports to: Branch Director at Assigned Location around Salem, OR

Status: Part-Time, Non-exempt, $15.75/hour

Boys & Girls Club of Salem Mission Statement:
“To inspire and enable all youth grades 1-12, especially youth from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens through the development of a positive self-image and self-reliance.”

Scope of Position:
Youth Development Professionals (YDPs) are responsible for overseeing the delivery of targeted youth development programming in one or more of the five (5) program areas: Education &

Career Development; Health & Life Skills; Character & Leadership; Sports Fitness &

Recreation; and Arts & innovation (STEAM). YDPs are expected to implement targeted programming along with ensuring a safe environment for the youth.

Education and Work Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required. Preferred some college or actively working towards a degree in a related field.
  • Prior experience in youth development, preferably with Boys & Girls Clubs.
  • Solid working knowledge of youth development principles and guidance techniques, including experience working directly with youths.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Mandatory current CPR and First Aid Certification – can be acquired through work training.
  • Food Handler’s Card – can be acquired through work training. Within 90 days of employment.
  • Demonstrate the ability to plan and implement programs that engage youth.
  • Interpersonal ability.
  • Creativity and flexibility are a must.
  • Willingness to adhere to approved organizational policies and procedures.
  • Computer efficient. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite applications, Excel, email, Internet use and research and the aptitude to learn new technology.
  • Effective comminutor. Uses appropriate style and correct grammar, spelling, composition and editing in a wide variety of written communications. Well developed listening and speaking skills in all settings – formal and informal, public and private, group and individual, correcting and encouraging. Able to communicate in different audiences and individuals of a wide variety of backgrounds and skill levels.
  • Organized and detail oriented. Able to multitask and focus, knowing how to manage time and prioritize workflow from beginning to end.
  • Demeanor. Polite, diplomatic and cordial, cooperative, supportive, flexible, reliable, timely and punctual, accepting of responsibility, able to form a broad perspective, and work under pressure.
  • Exercise good judgement and common sense. Able to anticipate, recognize and resolve problems efficiently and effectively.
  • Confidential. Protects continentality of matters and information to which the position is directly privy or learns by virtue of the position.
  • Regular and punctual attendance is essential function of this position.
  • Able to work successfully in a stressful and demanding environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Prepare Youth for Success

  • Create an environment that facilities the achievement of Youth Development outcomes.
  • Promote and stimulate program participation.
  • Provide guidance and role modeling to members.
  • Register new members and participate in their club orientation process.

Program Development and Implementation

  • Effectively implement and administer programs, services and activities that help youth achieve academic success, develop good character, and lead healthy lifestyles.
  • Monitor services and activities to ensure safety of members, quality in programs and appearance of the branch at all times.
  • Prepare daily activity reports.

Other Essential job Responsibilities

  • Ensure a productive work environment by participating in weekly branch staff meetings.
  • Participate in special programs, events, and other unit activities as assigned.
  • Consult with parents/guardians concerning member and branch issues.
  • Maintain close, daily contact with Club staff (professional and volunteer), Club members, and supervisor to receive/provide information, discuss issues and opportunities, explain guidelines/instructions; instruct; and advise/counsel.
  • Act as a front-line staff.
  • General safety and supervision of youth.
  • Ensure safety and cleanliness of facilities, including maintaining functionality of equipment.

In any position with the Boys & Girls Club, it is impossible to predict the many requests and assignments that may be made on an employee. This is the case with this position. Flexibility and a cooperative spirt are crucial characteristics of the individual who holds this position.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be well groomed and adhere to the required dress code.
  • Must be able to perform tasks of a repetitive nature without diminishing performance.
  • Must be able to walk, bend, stoop, squat, twist body, stand for short/long periods of time, kneel, push, pull, have sense of touch, reach, grasp with hands and fingers, lifting and carrying up to 20 pounds unassisted, climb stairs, close vision, distance vision, talk, hear, have eye-hand coordination, have mental dexterity, speak, read and work in noisy areas, as these movements are a regular requirement of this position.
  • Ability to speak, hear, and maintain high mental and visual attention at all time.
  • Must be able to stand and sit for extended periods and be able to walk moderate distances.
  • May walk or stand on varied surfaces.

Working Conditions:
Must work and interact with co-workers and public in a positive, professional manner inconformity with the Boys & Girls Club Mission Statement.

Works with limited supervision individually and in a team setting with other professionals.

This position may have frequent phone and in person contact with people from diverse backgrounds and in diverse circumstances who may be angry, hostile, confused or frustrated.

This position requires the mental aptitude to organize projects, set priorities, calculate, catalogue, inspect, analyze plans, comprehend, and cooperate with others. Therefore, the employee must be able to comprehend assignments and/or ask for additional information or clarification until the assignment is understood.

The employee will work on several projects at once with interruptions and noise from ringing telephones, walk-in traffic, multiple deadlines, and competing/changing priorities.

Will be exposed to a range of temperatures inside and outside of the building, heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, humidity, dust.

Additional requirements:

  • Must have a demonstrated enthusiasm and passion for the Boys & Girls Club’s work, be willing to work weekends and evenings, as required by the job.
  • Ability to pass a drug and alcohol screening test.
  • Candidate chosen for this position will be required to pass a criminal background check.
