We are looking to hire experienced swim instructors and people who are willing to train and become swim instructors to help youth of all ages develop proper swimming techniques and skills.
The mission of the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center is to serve all youth of Orange County by providing quality outdoor educational programs that instill in them an appreciation of the outdoors and the environment, teach effective teamwork, instruct about the cultural history of Orange County, and provide access to the natural resources of the surrounding areas.
The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be 16 years of age or high school graduate.
  • Must have or willing to obtain CPR, First Aid, and American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor or Basic Swim Instructor (BSI) certifications.
  • Strong swimming abilities.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Passionate and enthusiastic about teaching aquatic skills.
  • Ability to interact with all age levels.
  • Experience or willingness to work with children that have special needs.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Experience working as a swim instructor or lifeguard is a plus.
  • Sound knowledge of proper swimming techniques and water safety rules is a plus.
  • Ability to work with supervisors to resolve participant behavior problems.
  • Be a role model to swimmers, campers, and staff in your attitude and behavior.
  • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
  • Set a good example to swimmers, campers and others in regard to general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
  • Works as part of a team with other IROEC staff members and uses interpersonal communication techniques to ensure the success of the program and positive work environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assessing and evaluating the progress of students and adjusting teaching programs accordingly.
  • Planning swimming lessons that take into account students' abilities and progressive development.
  • Teaching swimming techniques, swimming strokes, and water safety rules to students with varying swimming abilities.
  • Identifying incorrect swimming techniques and correcting students accordingly.
  • Assisting more experienced swimmers to enhance their swimming abilities.
  • Monitoring students to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Implementing rules for each swim session.
  • Completing attendance, progress, and accident reports as necessary.
  • Ensuring that the swimming pool and restrooms are kept clean and tidy.
  • Ensuring all swimming aids and equipment are in good working order.
  • Support overall operations of the aquatics area at the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and be in the pool for extended periods.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move moderate to heavy objects, which requires frequent and proper bending.
  • Employees must be able to lift or move items weighing up to 60 pounds unassisted.
  • This position requires the employee to work outdoors, exposed to all weather conditions as well as dust, pollen, plant life, insects, and wildlife.
  • Employees for this position would be exposed to pool chemicals, such as chlorine.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The Swim Instructor position is at the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center (IROEC). Working in a camp environment includes providing customer service, solving problems, and cooperation with others, regardless of your title. Working at the IROEC specifically requires a desire to develop and work with youth, which can occasionally lead to challenging interactions.
