The Opportunity and Who You’ll Work With: 

Position Type: Regular, Full Time, Benefits Eligible

Work Format: Hybrid; open to negotiation -- minimum of 3 days onsite preferably more, maximum of 2 days remote, preferably less.

Schedule: Monday – Friday. Hours are typically 04:00AM-12:00PM Eastern Time.

Our Morning Edition team is responsible for localizing one of most important news magazine programs. The team includes five people -- an executive producer, one producer, one associate producer, a host, and a field producer. The team also includes key support from one of our broadcast recording technicians.

Each day, the team focuses on giving listeners the news they need to know to start their day. Morning Edition is an important mix of national, international, and Boston-specific stories. Our team is in charge of deciding which stories make up that broadcast for Boston listeners.

As Associate Producer of Morning Edition, you will play is a key part of our early news operation, responsible for the overall sound and editorial content of WBUR’s morning news programming and also for bringing the most urgent, timely, and local conversations to light through our powerful show team.

At the direction of the Executive Producer, you will help create Morning Edition each day -- helping to choose, report, write, and edit the stories that are most important to our listeners. You will create material during the morning news programming, including newscasts, host copy, and more. You will also produce midday newscasts once Morning Edition is complete.

You will help set WBUR’s news agenda for the day. And, as an editorial leader at WBUR, you will play a crucial role balancing the needs of Morning Edition with the needs of the organization as a whole, and work to nurture an environment in which talented journalists are able to do their best work.

Essential Functions:

  • (35%) Writing stories for Morning Edition and WBUR's midday newscasts. Conceive of story ideas; conduct research, verify sources, write stories, proofread stories.
  • (25%) Conduct interviews for news stories: Research stories, plan questions, locate and contact guest, conduct interview, transcribe interview, edit the interview and insert the interview into the news story.
  • (15%) Monitor news sources (X, internet, wire-service, sources, magazines) for story ideas; Stay in regular contact with sources.
  • (5%) Work with Morning Edition’s Executive Producer and Newscast Producer, digital producers and editors, and WBUR web colleagues to coordinate coverage among WBUR’s various platforms.
  • (10%) Consult with Morning Edition Writer and Senior Producer and WBUR News Director to set news agenda and plan coverage for the day. Consult with wbur.org digital producers to create content for the station website as needed.
