**THIS IS A SUMMER POSITION. EMPLOYMENT IS SEASONAL AND TEMPORARY**

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The OMME 5-Week Academic Enrichment program helps English/multilingual learners improve their language skills and reach their full potential. Our program is carefully crafted to cater to the unique needs of students with varying levels of English proficiency, enabling them to focus on specific aspects of language development, including reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills. Our interactive and engaging language-rich learning activities are designed with a project-based learning approach that fosters a supportive and enjoyable environment for students to practice and refine their language skills. The program features a comprehensive academic curriculum that includes Math and ESL/English Language Arts, ensuring that cognitively demanding tasks and grade-level complex texts are accessible to multilingual learners. In addition to academics, our program also offers a diverse range of enrichment activities, including STEM, Arts, Leadership Building, and Physical Fitness, tailored to the needs of English/multilingual learners entering 1st-12th grades.

BPS Summer Learning Academies aim to:
  • Stem summer learning loss and increase academic achievement
  • Develop student socio-emotional skills and increase student efficacy by building skills and competencies
  • Strengthen the effectiveness of school-community partnerships
  • Promote student health and wellness
REPORTS TO: The position reports to the site coordinator, who works in close collaboration with the BPS Office of Expanded Learning Time/Office of Multilingual and Multicultural Education (OMME)

PROGRAM SCHEDULE: ESL/SEI Summer Learning Academy Teachers are required to attend all scheduled central and site-based planning meetings, training and professional development sessions, work all required program hours, as well as complete all required wrap-up duties, as indicated in the job description. All training and program hours as indicated in program-specific job description.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Summer Learning Academy Teachers provide students with rigorous instruction that demonstrates the BPS core competencies for effective teaching listed below. Due to the short duration of summer programs and the critical need to boost student learning during this time, it is particularly important that teachers in BPS summer programs:
  • In charge of staying updated on OMME's instructional guidance for multilingual students to facilitate their academic language growth and enhance their proficiency in English.
  • Actively participate in scheduled professional development sessions.
  • Allocate dedicated planning time outside regular instructional hours to ensure effective curriculum implementation.
  • Assume responsibility for OMME's ESL and/or Math curriculum guides and materials.
  • Integrate language development pedagogy to enrich ESL and/or Math instruction for ELs.
  • Utilize the WIDA English Language Development Standards Framework to support students across varying ELD levels.
  • Emphasize language development while continuously monitoring students' instructional needs throughout the program.
  • Conduct comprehensive summer assessments, integrating informative, formative, and summative components to inform instructional decisions, particularly for EL students with ILPs.
  • Utilize data analysis to guide ESL/SEI and/or Math instruction and facilitate appropriate student grouping.
  • Design, develop, and deliver ESL and/or Math lessons, assignments, and enrichment activities using district summer curriculum resources.
  • Ensure timely maintenance of student attendance and progress records.
  • Collaborate with team members to enhance instructional practices for ELs.
  • Implement differentiated instructional practices to meet diverse student needs.
  • Provide relevant and timely data to students, families, Site Coordinators, and the OMME Program, maintaining accurate records.
  • Stay updated on OMME's instructional guidance for multilingual students to support their academic language growth and English proficiency.
  • Deliver a rigorous ESL/SEI and/or Math instructional program, including daily development and posting of content and language objectives, along with cognitively demanding lessons and assignments.
  • Establish a productive and respectful learning environment and classroom culture.
  • Coordinate with the site coordinator to monitor student outcomes and ensure academic and social-emotional goals are met.
  • Oversee classroom management and enforce discipline standards.
  • Fulfill additional duties specified in the program-specific job description as needed.

Hours:
General hours encompass a 5-hour workday with additional prep and planning time varying by specific sites. For instance, programming at sites may span from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm or 9:30 am to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Job duties will necessitate planning and
TERMS:
  • $51.74/hr - Total compensation is set based on hours of work, including professional development, on-site program time, and additional duties Compensation differs based on the Summer Learning Academy program.
  • Site-specific job requirements, program hours, and training schedules are to be determined by the Summer Learning Academy program. Agreement to site-specific terms is required for hire.
  • Payroll will be processed on a biweekly basis after receipt of completed timesheets in accordance with the BPS summer payroll schedule.
  • All employees must read and agree to the BPS 2024 Summer Program Terms of Employment . See BPS terms of employment for stipend dissemination guidelines (stipend includes pre-summer training and PD, on-site planning, summer programming, and any "wrap-up" duties).
QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED:
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • ESL License and/or SEI Endorsement
  • At least 2 years of formal teaching experience
  • Willing to explore student learning in a non-traditional setting and connect student learning through project-based, experiential learning.
  • Willing to work in close collaboration with a non-profit with shared goals in a student-centered, school-aligned, results-focused initiative.
  • Demonstrated experience working with English Learners, Students with Interrupted Formal Education, and/or English Learner Students with Disabilities.
  • Excellent classroom management skills, and the ability to work proactively with the Site Program Coordinator.
  • Ability to provide a learning environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, emotional, and cultural development of the child.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet the Core Competencies of Effective Teaching established by the Boston Public Schools as outlined above.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States. Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment.

QUALIFICATIONS - PREFERRED:
  • Current teacher in the Boston Public Schools.
  • Experience working in a BPS summer learning program.
  • BPS values linguistic diversity and believes that candidates who speak another language bring added value to the classroom, school, and district culture and diversity. BPS is particularly interested in candidates who are fluent in one of BPS' official languages: Spanish, Creole (Cape Verdean), Creole (Haitian), Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, & Somali.
