Boston Public Schools is Hiring a Student Support Coordinator, 7-12 Near Boston, MA

Boston Public Schools seeks an exceptional Student Support Coordinator who is highly qualified and knowledgeable to join our community of teachers, learners and leaders.

It is the mission of English High School to provide a unique opportunity for all of its students to acquire career skills-both academic and vocational-which will enable them to compete successfully in a technologically advanced economy. Through a blend of academic and vocational instruction, applied learning, and work site experience, our students acquire the career skills and the academic knowledge that will ensure success in their chosen career and in post-secondary education.

The Student Support Coordinator at English High School will assist with the initiatives for ninth and tenth grade students and their families. In addition, the Student Support Coordinator will monitor student attendance and do outreach to the students and their families in order to increase student attendance and achievement. The Student Support Coordinator will support all ninth and tenth grade initiatives that support the student achievement and work to reduce the disparities with regard to reduce the achievement gap.

Terms:
BTU, Group 1 - Person appointed to this position will be paid according to his/her current salary rate and will work an eleven-month year. Those whose current work year is ten (10) months will be paid an additional ten (10%) percent for the eleventh-month. Mandatory meetings will be scheduled in June and August as part of the eleven-month requirement.
Reports to: Head of schools

Responsibilities
  1. Assist with the School-Wide Student Support Coordinator with the monitoring of student achievement and student attendance. This will include the screening of attendance, working with Student Support and working to improve communications with families and MPTVHS.
  2. Assist with interventions for ninth and tenth grade students who are exhibiting behaviors that are detrimental to themselves and/or to the school community.
  3. Conduct outreach to the ninth and tenth grade students and their families in order to increase student attendance. This will consist of calling home, meeting with families in school, and sending letters to the home.
  4. Support and coordinate assemblies for the ninth and tenth grade student body with Director Student Support Services.
  5. Coordinate Weekly Progress Reports for the ninth and tenth grade and repeaters, i.e., meet with their teachers and contact the guardians.
  6. Assist the Guidance with Individualized Student Support Plans ( ISSP s)
  7. Screen ninth and tenth grade Student Support Referrals for counseling with the School-Wide Student Support Coordinator.
  8. Meet with the School-Wide Student Support Coordinator bi-weekly (once every other week).
  9. Attend monthly Student Support Team Meetings.
  10. Meet with small learning communities to develop plans for at-risk students.
  11. Coordinate external care resources for students.
  12. Meet with School-Wide Student Support Coordinator on a regular basis to share information about school issues.
  13. Perform other related duties requested by the Head of Schools/Director and/or the Assistant Head of Schools.
Qualifications - Required
  1. Education: Master's Degree in Social Work (MSW), Counseling or a related field
  2. Massachusetts Pupil Adjustment Counselor/School Social Worker license
  3. Minimum of three (3) years professional experience in urban K-12 education or human services
  4. Demonstrated skills to work with schools, parents, and community-based constituencies.
  5. At least 3 years' experience in establishing and maintaining a multicultural community of learning
  6. Experience in conflict resolution
  7. Experience working in or with the Boston Public Schools
  8. Expertise in database management
  9. Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  10. Excellent interpersonal skills to work with school, students, parents and community based constituencies
  11. Commitment to ethnic diversity, heterogeneity of learning groups, and multicultural approach to education
