Boston Public Schools is Hiring a Director of Operations and School Climate (Tier D Managerial)(SY24-25) Near Boston, MA

This position is for a founding member of Boston Adult Technical Academy’s new campus in East Boston (1150 Saratoga Street). This position will be full time in the East Boston location. Founding members of this campus will have a unique opportunity to build a new program and create programming that works best for our students. This campus will serve 19-22 year old, Multilingual Learner students who are new to the country with limited English proficiency. A successful candidate will be asked to be a leader in this new location and help to innovate to address this population in new ways.
Boston Adult Technical Academy (BATA) is seeking an extraordinary Director of Operations and School Climate School Climate and Non-Instructional Activities to work in our school. BATA is an alternative public high school whose mission is to serve students who are overage (typically 19-22), many of whom have experienced life challenges that have impeded their education. In addition, BATA also has a large population of recent immigrants that require intervention to graduate from High School. Working with experienced faculty in an environment that blends strong academics and support, students are given the opportunity to earn a Boston Public Schools diploma and to reach their fullest potential through a curriculum that inspires critical and creative thinking, independent learning, and active citizenship. Our program, beginning at 9:00am and runs until 3:30 serves students with different academic needs up to age 23, including those who have dropped out of high school and have decided to return to earn a diploma, those who are overage and have recently come to this country, and those who are leaving more traditional high schools for a more innovative model of education.
General Summary
The Director of Operations and School Climate oversees the school’s operational activities and is responsible for all matters of school management and oversight that do not directly relate to instruction. This position handles all non-instructional obligations so that the school leader can focus on student achievement and the professional development of the teaching staff. The Director of School Climate will report to the School Principal and work closely with members of the BPS Central Office Operations Team (liaisoning with OHC, Budget, Food Services, Office of Data and Accountability, Communications, COO Office, etc.) The Director may manage the School Secretary and other members of the school-based staff in non-instructional positions.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Budget and Finance
  • Fiscal Oversight: work with the school principal and BPS central finance state to develop and manage the schools budget
  • Manage Probable Org process in conjunction with other school administrators.
  • Maintain accurate records of all financial transactions and submit them to the BPS central finance state for processing [or manage the school secretary in doing this]
  • Participate in monthly meetings to review/account for budget variances Manage school purchase order process
School Culture & Operations Support
  • Prepare campus for new school year by doing everything from ordering furniture, equipment, and classroom supplies to ensuring school services (i.e. student food services, student transportation services) are lined up and ready for action
  • Maintain a clean, neat and highly functional campus by managing custodial personnel and third-party contracts for trash removal, recycling, and security
  • Manage the schools food and transportation services by ensuring delivery of service and coordinating with service providers
  • Manage the schools supply and asset inventory
  • Work collaboratively with other school leadership members to ensure effective communications with staff, parents, and the community.
  • Drive the creation and maintenance of school operational systems that support high-quality instruction and family engagement.
  • Conduct regular school culture walkthroughs to help staff maintain a high bar of excellence
  • Facilitate Community, Culture, and Climate team.
  • Perform other related duties as requested by the school leader and/or central office.
Partnership Program Development and Coordination
  • Evaluate the partnership model and present current effectiveness and impact to school leadership.
  • Identify new partnerships as well as maintain current, impactful partnerships, with a continued focus on maximizing resources.
  • Work closely with community organizations to ensure that students have access to all supports (academic, social-emotional, health and wellness, enrichment) they need to be successful.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with key community partners.
  • Design and implement structures to identify and recruit community partners to support students.
Family and Community Engagement
  • Coordinate and plan School Site Council meetings including logistics, programming, and follow-up.
  • Monitor and develop content for family and community stakeholders and develop sharing system across multiple mediums (website, social media, telephone blasts, backpacked materials, etc).
QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED:
  • Strong commitment to the Boston Adult Technical Academy's mission, values, and educational model.
  • Desire to be a part of building a growing, innovative school and to meet the challenges this poses.
  • Bachelor's Degree, Masters Degree is prefered.
  • Minimum 2-4 years general management experience.
  • Ability to collaborate and work well under pressure.
  • Must hold a valid Administrative/Supervisor license from DESE.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States. Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment.
  • Previous school experience a plus.
QUALIFICATIONS - PREFERRED:
  • Demonstrated successful experience as a classroom teacher and teacher leader.
  • Experience working in nonprofit/community-based settings and experience with Boston-based youth-serving networks.
Terms: Managerial Employee Tier D

NOTE: School-based managerial employees will work 223 days between July 1st and June 30th each year. The 223 day work-year will include the 180 days in which school is in session, and the additional days will be determined by the employee and the principal or headmaster of the school.
School-based managerial employees are not eligible for vacation time or compensatory time. In the event of school cancellation due to snow or inclement weather, school-based managerial employees need not report to work.
