Description

Summary

The Phlebotomist is responsible for sustaining an effective support structure for the laboratory functions in a clinical setting of Boone Memorial Hospital, Inc. (BMH), by providing optimal, safe, and effective care to patients utilizing the hospital policies and procedures. The Phlebotomist will obtain and prepare specimens for analysis and perform various screening tests as well as assist with other related activities involved in providing patient care in compliance with hospital standards, as well as federal, state, and local government regulations

Essential Functions

The Phlebotomist is expected to perform the following essential functions:

  • Collection of routine, timed and STAT specimens.
  • Proper identification of patient(s) prior to collection.
  • Provide age-appropriate care for neonates, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
  • Transport specimens to laboratory in accordance with current infection control and prevention policies.
  • Collect chain-of-custody specimens, when required.
  • Responsible for answering the phone, assessing the need and responding accordingly.

  • Proficient in competencies as outlined in the phlebotomy competency assessment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

  • None

Physical demands

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.

Travel required

  • None expected.

Required education and experience

  • Certification from an accredited Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant program is preferred.

Preferred education and experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
