Description

To perform basic nursing care procedures for patients under the supervision of the Registered Nurse according to hospital policy and procedure.

Essential Functions

The CNA / Ward Clerk is expected to perform the following essential functions:

  • Bathing, dressing and undressing patients and assisting patient with personal hygiene.
  • Serving and collecting food trays, feeding as needed and providing patients with beverages and snacks as ordered.
  • Provide basic personal hygiene to patients, changing bed linens and bed pads when needed.
  • Answering signals and lights promptly and courteously.
  • Transports patients between departments to/from other departments or to their car in a safe manner using proper equipment according to the physicians order, RN Charge Nurse or other management hospital personnel following all safety procedure guidelines via carrier or wheelchair.
  • Transports specimens to laboratory as per appropriate technique as instructed, promptly and efficiently.
  • Assisting to prepare patients for various exams and treatments, remaining with the patient as needed.
  • Taking accurate vital signs and reporting them and recording of same in appropriate manner.
  • Accurately measuring and recording intake and output.
  • Applying warm and cold moist compresses as directed as well as dry heat according to physicians order.
  • Maintain a neat, clean, safe and cost effective patient and unit environment.
  • Responding positively when asked to perform a task with the job description.
  • Assisting willingly in other departments as needed.
  • Answering the telephones professionally and appropriately.
  • Maintaining a pleasant attitude when dealing with patient needs.
  • Learning new methods to improve patient care in an enthusiastic manner, works as a team player.
  • Anticipating the patients needs and responding appropriately.
  • Complying with hospital policy i.e., dress code, uniform policy and all other policies as required.
  • Showing proper respect to supervisory personnel, medical providers, patients/guests and fellow workers.
  • Attending in-service education and meetings as required.
  • Enters electronic documentation and/or physician orders into the computer for patients as ordered.
  • Provide optimum assistance to the medical and nursing staff by providing/assisting patients with activities of daily living and daily assignments as delegated by RN/charge nurse or other medical providers.
  • Other duties as assigned per charge nurse, supervisor or other superiors as may be required.
  • Maintain and perform all functions with equipment as applicable to work area.
  • Activate and respond appropriately to emergency and urgent situations.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient, staff, unit and institution information.
  • Maintains a positive attitude under stressful situations.
  • Compiling the patient chart accurately using the electronic system in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Using tact and diplomacy in dealing with patients, visitors, physicians, and co-workers.
  • Showing discretion in handling confidential information. Must comply with HIPAA regulations.
  • Making timely entries into electronic system regarding admissions and discharges in an appropriate sequence.
  • Demonstrating a willingness to work when and where needed.
  • Maintaining the patient chart with necessary forms and preparing the chart for discharge in an appropriate sequence.
  • Answering the telephone and relaying messages or calls the Charge Nurse in a timely manner.
  • Calling for housekeeping, laboratory, maintenance as needed on the unit.
  • Receiving and directing visitors in a friendly and courteous manner.
  • Transcribing orders from the physician order sheet and completing necessary data entry into the computer, i.e., lab and x-ray, and pharmacy orders when necessary preparing them for the Charge Nurse to initiate the orders, keeping in mind her limitations in not accepting verbal offers from physicians.
  • Answering light calls from the nurse call system at the nurses station and relaying request to the appropriate nursing personnel in a courteous manner.
  • Assisting the Charge Nurse at the desk as requested in a cheerful, willing manner.
  • Communicating with other departments in a competent manner.
  • Demonstrating courtesy, and competency and good telephone manners.
  • Demonstrating a desire for self-improvement displays self-inactive.
  • Other duties as assigned or may be required.

Required Skills, Qualifications, and Competencies

  • A high school diploma or the equivalent, with evidence of the ability to spell correctly and to perform simple arithmetic accurately.
  • Must show the ability to complete clerical work in an accurate manner with reasonable speed in an atmosphere that has frequent interruptions.
  • Must demonstrate a willingness to do work as assigned by the Charge Nurse of the Director of Nurses.
  • Must possess the ability to use tact and diplomacy in dealing with patients, visitors, physicians, and co-workers.
  • Must keep confidential information confidential.
  • Must demonstrate a willingness to work weekends and rotating shifts.
  • Computer skills and medical terminology are essential.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • None

Physical demands

Ability to perform various motor skills such as; standing for long periods of time, walking, lifting (up to 50 pounds) using proper lifting techniques, stair climbing, reaching, bending, twisting, pushing, pulling, squatting, grasping and arm-hand coordination on a continuous basis.

Travel required

  • None expected.

Required education and experience

  • High school diploma or the equivalent is preferred. Completion of a vocational education program for nursing assistants is desired, but not mandatory. Must have and maintain a valid CNA certification. Adequate computer skills are essential.
  • Valid CPR certification.
