COUNTY OF BOONE, INDIANA

POSITION: Litigation Paralegal 1

DEPARTMENT: Boone County Prosecutor’s Office

WORK SCHEDULE: 8:00a.m.-4:00p.m., M-F

JOB CATEGORY: COMOT (Computer, Office Machine Operation, Technician)

STATUS: Full-time

FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt

Incumbent serves as Litigation Paralegal for the Boone County Prosecutor’s Office, responsible for providing the Office with legal assistance and the skills required to produce and deliver legal services to the citizens this Office represents through its criminal division. To work under the direct supervision of the Attorneys in litigation work related to the criminal division.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

DUTIES:

Prepares, updates, and maintains department files and software, including continual updating online case files with documents, videos, motions, pictures, and other digital information.

Prepares and draft plea agreements and other legal pleadings at the request of Attorney(s).

Diary State’s and Defendant’s discovery due dates and follow through with submitting and receiving discovery on due dates.

Prepares/mails letters/email or other correspondence to advise/remind clients (officers, witnesses, victims of Court) dates, continuances, office hours, and other information from attorneys.

Maintains frequent communication with various agencies and individuals in exchanging information, including the Courts, probation and other County departments.

Obtains evidence (body cams, lab reports, police reports, photos, other digital evidence) from law enforcements agencies for purpose of discovery within time frames set by local rules.

Assists in trial preparation, including, but not limited to, jury instructions, verdict forms, photographing accident scenes, locating/interviewing witnesses, obtaining police/accident reports, photographs, lost wage information, and trial exhibits.

Reviews case files for purpose of determining what discovery should be sought from non law enforcement agencies.

Reviews and redacts documents that have confidential information - example medial records or mental health records.

Attends Courts and assist Deputy Prosecutor in Court proceedings.

Greets visitors in the Office in a courteous manner and assist them to their desired destination by promptly notifying the appropriate Attorney or employee.

Answers office telephone, providing information and assistance, taking messages, and/or directing callers to appropriate individual, attorney, or agency.

Assists with the appellate process for filing with the Court of Appeals.

Performs duties of other office personnel in their absence or as needed.

Performs related duties as assigned.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS

I. JOB REQUIREMENTS AND DIFFICULTY OF WORK:

Associate Degree in paralegal studies, criminal justice field or related area or Previous prosecutor office/legal staff/professional office experience 3 years.

Must be able to pass a criminal background check - no previous arrests or convictions.

Must be at least 21 years old.

Ability to obtain specialized training/certification in IDACS and NCIC within 18 months of start of employment.

Ability to operate standard office equipment such as a computer, fax machine, copier, scanner, telephone, intercom, and label maker.

Ability to compare or observe similarities and differences between data, people, or things.

Ability to compile, collate, classify, analyze, evaluate, observe, diagnose, and investigate data.

Ability to coordinate, place, make determinations, and take action based on data analysis.

Must be able to handle confidential information and keep it confidential.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

PHYSICAL EFFORT/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Incumbent performs majority of duties in a standard office environment, involving working alone with minimum supervision, working under time pressure, working on several tasks at the same time, reading/carrying out simple written instructions, applying knowledge of people/locations, planning and laying out assigned work projects, counting and making simple arithmetic additions/subtractions, prepare detailed reports, such as arrest reports, financial statement, activity reports, crime statistics, sitting and walking at will, working with others in a team environment, working rapidly for long periods, understanding and carrying out oral instructions, memorizing and retaining instructions, testifying in legal proceedings/court, working with or exposed to violent/irate individuals, lifting/carrying under 25 pounds, handling/grasping/fingering objects, keyboarding, speaking clearly, and sitting for long periods of time. Incumbent occasionally works extended hours and travels out of town for appropriate trainings.
