Job Title: Peer Specialist (Part-time) 20 hours
Department: Check Hep C - 6202
Reports To: Check Hep C Peer Navigator
Location: BOOM!Health Harm Reduction Center
Job Summary: This role is a crucial part of the harm reduction counseling team, responsible for providing a diverse range of office and street-based harm reduction services to active substance users, injection drug users (IDUs), sex workers, and individuals living with Hepatitis C (HCV). As a Peer Educator, you will be conducting outreach and linking individuals to our Check Hepatitis C program, while providing educational discussions.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
· Perform outreach activities and prevention education, and recruit high-risk, hard-to-reach injection drug users, other drug users, and sex workers to the Check Hep C program.
· Ability to work as part of a mobile outreach team
· Ability to work with people who use drugs
· Gather participant feedback to ensure that the agencies we refer to are treating them with respect
· Escort participants to access HCV medical care and supportive services to facilitate the treatment and their cure of HCV.
· Maintain accurate, complete, and understandable data collection sheets when conducting outreach.
· Provide daily data collection sheets to the Check Hep C Patient Navigator for review at the end of each day's work shift.
· Maintain a professional working relationship with participants
· Maintain a professional working relationship with healthcare providers and community agencies providing services to participants.
· Package harm reduction supplies for distribution to participants whenever necessary
· Ability to use good judgment regarding confidentiality issues
· Ability to help clients identify risk reduction strategies (safer sex, safer drug use, needle exchange, etc.
· Make referrals to internal programs for services that we provide.
· Qualifications/Criteria:
· Develop knowledge of infectious disease transmission and prevention practices for injectors (HIV, Hepatitis C, Opiate Overdose Prevention, health education, outreach strategies, harm reduction theory and practice)
· Ability to complete and understand outreach data collection sheets.
· Must attend scheduled training by the New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute-Harm Reduction Unit on Needle Stick and Law Enforcement
· Must attend all assigned HCV and harm reduction trainings, to include training in Confidentiality Laws
· Ability to accurately and neatly collect demographic data on data collection forms
· Available to work a flexible weekday schedule
· Physically able to climb stairs, move and lift boxes and supply packs weighing up to 20 pounds
· Bilingual (Spanish) preferred
