Job Title: Health Educator

Department: FPHNY

Reports To: Assistant Director of HR Services

Location: Field Work and Harm Reduction Center

Job Summary:

Conduct outreach services in the North Bronx and at the Harm Reduction Center for program recruitment and retention, including distribution of health education and risk reduction information and safe injection equipment and other supplies to people who use drugs.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

· Conduct Syringe exchange program enrollment, including review of substance use history, current drug use practices, medical waste disposal practices, and providing low-threshold counseling and education to participants within the agency and on the mobile unit

· Data collection is required

· Conduct Opioid Overdose Reversal Training

· Ability to explain, describe, and discuss safer injection practices, other safe drug using strategies, and safer sex options

· Street level outreach for program recruitment and retention, including distribution of health education and risk reduction information

· Ability to train to conduct rapid HIV and Hepatitis C on the mobile unit

· Preparation, packing, and inventory of syringes and related program supplies

· Provision of and documentation of prevention education, counseling, referrals, safer drug using education, and strategies

· Ability to distribute high-risk prevention supplies, including female & male condoms, bleach, kits, safer smoking kits, and provision of sterile syringes

· Assist in monitoring the inventory and ordering harm reduction supplies

· Assist in stocking mobile outreach unit

Qualifications/Criteria:

· Minimum of one year experience volunteering or working in harm reduction setting.

· Basic knowledge and ability to discuss safer drug user strategies and safer sex options to program members

· Basic knowledge of infectious disease transmission, HIV, and Hepatitis C and the coronavirus.

· Good communication skills are a must.

· Basic computer skills, including experience with MS Word and MS Outlook

· Ability to work a flexible schedule, including afternoons, evening and weekend rotations with proper notification

· Physically able to climb stairs, move and lift boxes and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds

· Collection of disposed of syringes found in the community for placement into appropriate medical waste containers for medical waste disposal

· Receiving of program supply deliveries and proper stocking of materials

· Must demonstrate a commitment to advocacy and activism, particularly in the crises of HIV/AIDS, homelessness and drug policy.

· Bilingual (English/Spanish) is preferred

Education:

High School diploma required.

Salary: $50,000.00 per annum
