Bonnell Aluminum is Hiring an Environmental Health and Safety Manager Near Niles, MI

This is a leadership position that requires the incumbent to have a high degree of comfort engaging directly and often with individuals at all levels within the plant and inside and outside Bonnell. It also requires effective sourcing and utilization of resources (employees and external experts, equipment, materials) to achieve environmental compliance. Development and improvement of the environmental management system to meet ISO14001 standards. Continue educational self-development through leadership, technical and Six Sigma training.

What You’ll Be Responsible For:

  • Responsible for all Niles plant safety & environmental operations and compliance on a 24/7 basis.
  • Responsible for maintaining and improving an environmental management system (ISO14001) at the plant level which ensures compliance with or exceeds the requirements of environmental laws, regulations, policies, and guidance documents.
  • Responsible for managing environmental demands with manufacturing demands (costs, productivity, environmental compliance, quality requirements; safety and sense of urgency)
  • Responsible for conservation of resources and reuse/recycling of waste to control costs and minimizing and eliminating waste streams and emissions.
  • Responsible for achieving goodwill with employees, community, and regulatory environmental groups.
  • Manage Wastestreams & Wastwater Treatment (0-5 Direct Reports)
  • Provides Environmental Compliance Direction to 10-25 salaried employees and 150-400 hourly employees
  • Assists Division EHS Director in establishing strategic safety and environmental direction; and crafting and implementing safety and environmental policies and procedures that support Bonnell’s short- and long-term objectives.
  • Develops/Communicates the environmental policies and procedures for the Niles plant
  • Ensures consistency in tone and focus in safety & environmental systems in alignment with other plants.

What You’ll Need to Have:

  • Ensure implementation of and compliance with all company environmental regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Management of the Risk Elimination System.
  • Implement his/her skills to ensure that Direct Reports are a team with the right distribution of skills and have the leadership qualities to engage the workforce in achieving plant goals.
  • Represent the plant as a valuable member of the environmental community in which plant is located.
  • Communicate the need for environmental awareness to management and the workforce to keep them abreast of current and changing conditions.
  • In communicating to the management and employees, provide information and requirements that are clear, concise, and accurate so that people can concentrate on doing their job.
  • Report on key metrics, challenges, and opportunities to Plant Manager and Division EHS Director.
  • Acquire, manage, and maintain all environmental permits associated with the Plant.
  • Manage hazardous waste generation and disposal to comply with regulatory requirements.
  • Manage universal, special, and solid wastes to dispose and recycle in accordance with State and Federal standards.
  • Manage recordkeeping associated with all environmental permits and Federal requirements.
  • Manage recycling and reuse systems necessary for plant compliance or operations.
  • Track and plan for new environmental regulations.
  • Determine how environmental regulations can impact new or proposed Bonnell Aluminum processes.
  • Communicate with management, department heads, and other employees concerning environmental and safety issues.
  • Develop strategic relationships with regulatory agencies, attorneys, and consultants.
  • Continue to develop their own knowledge, skills, and capabilities.
  • Identify learning opportunities and development experiences for utilizing and developing direct reports strengths.
  • Working knowledge of Federal environmental regulations and at least one state’s environmental regulations (preferably Michigan).
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other necessary computer programs.
  • Understanding of environmental compliance issues.
  • Basic knowledge of financial concepts.
  • Understanding of the engineering of wastewater water systems.

It Would Be Great if You Had:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in an engineering or environmental-related field.
  • 3 years in an environmental-related field
  • Environmental regulatory experience
  • Operation or management of wastewater treatment or remediation systems
  • Interacting with audits and inspections
  • Representing the “Company” outside the “Company”.
