Job Summary/Basic Function:
This position is responsible for providing daily paralegal assistance, operations support, and administrative support to the Office of General Counsel. The position will report to University attorneys. The position will assist and support attorneys in a wide variety of transactions and legal research, draft and edit legal documents such as contracts and briefs and assist with legal research. The position will also manage and organize legal documents with software tools and technology. Must be able to understand and apply specialized legal terminology in documents and communications and communicate professionally with clients. Must be able to work independently and collaboratively with attorneys and campus clients. This position works full-time in the office.
Department Overview:
The Boise State Office of General Counsel provides, manages and coordinates all legal services for the University in a collaborative, collegial, responsive and professional manner. The Office provides advice and counsel on a wide variety of matters to the University, including officers, administrators, and faculty and staff who are acting on behalf of the University. These matters include, but are not limited to, drafting, review and negotiation of agreements, advising on legislative and policy matters, employment, student affairs, athletics, responding to public record requests, real property transactions, intellectual property matters and other legal matters affecting the University. The Office also represents the University in administrative proceedings before federal and state agencies and manages and coordinates all litigation matters.
Level Scope:
Recognized subject matter expert who knows how to apply theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding of the professional field with limited oversight from managers. Independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function; requires deep job knowledge of areas typically obtained through higher education combined with experience. Manages large projects or processes and problems faced are difficult and often complex; analyzes problems/issues of diverse scope and determines solutions. May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy. Influences others regarding policies, practices and procedures.
Essential Functions:
60% of Time the Paralegal must:
  • Assist with legal documents and transactions, to include tasks such as: draft and edit legal documents including agreements, real estate documents, affidavits, briefs, discovery documents, deposition summaries and legal correspondence.
  • Research and analyze case law, regulations, administrative guidance, statutes, legislation and legislative history regarding pertinent legal issues and draft summaries or memoranda under the supervision of attorneys.
  • Review filings and other documents and assists in preparing pleadings and other administrative or litigation materials; assist with preparation of correspondence; and arranges for service or mailing of documents and correspondence.
  • Assist with preparation of agenda items and public notices required by State agencies, governing boards, or legislators, and assist with creation of reports upon request regarding transactions and agreements.
25% of the time, the position will:
  • Maintain the Office of General Counsel's legal software, including file, document, and legal matter management software, electronic filing and recordkeeping platforms.
  • Establish, maintain, and oversee software or other systems to track and maintain legal matters and associated documents and files, including implementing standards for data entry; establishing or maintaining computerized data base of agreements, forms and other legal matters.
10% of the time, the position will:
  • Act as a point of contact for the Office, respond to inquiries from University faculty and staff regarding general information requests, status of matters, legal processes, clarification of regulations and state statutes.
  • Travel for conferences, training opportunities or to assist with State Board meetings.
5% of the time: Other duties and special projects as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills, including the ability to analyze and identify legal issues under supervision of the attorneys in the Office of General Counsel, familiarity with legal terminology.
  • Ability to independently work and self-regulate multiple priorities/tasks and perform work with attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally, including demonstrable ability to edit and write business and legal correspondence using proper grammar and punctuation as demonstrated in application materials.
  • Excellent drafting/proofing/editing skills and ability to perform and communicate effectively under pressure.
  • Ability to meet project deadlines while adapting to immediate demands.
  • Working in an environment that requires maintaining strict confidentiality while managing highly sensitive documents and information.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and a strong sense of curiosity.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Five (5) years or greater of paralegal experience working at a law firm or similar environment; or a juris doctor with a least two (2) years of experience in a law firm or similar environment.
  • Good knowledge of contractual agreements and legal transactions; thorough understanding of legal ethics, privilege and need for confidentiality.
  • Experience preparing or negotiating contractual agreements or experience with other legal transactional work; drafting legal documents and related correspondence; experience working in legal or other document management databases (Westlaw, HighQ, Everlaw or similar).
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in paralegal or related studies or paralegal certificate preferred for exposure to and training in legal ethics, case file management, electronic legal research, specific areas of the law (including torts, contracts and constitutional law), evidence gathering, legal document drafting, and court processes and rules.
  • Over five years' experience at a law firm doing transactional work with at least two (2) years with increasingly sophisticated experience in providing paralegal support to a law firm.
  • Knowledge of legal and/or contract management software, such as iManage, iContracts, HighQ, Everlaw, Oracle products, or others.
Salary and Benefit s:
Salary range is $85,000 to $95,000 annually, depending upon relevant experience.
