Job Summary/Basic Function:

The purpose of the Hazardous Waste Technician position is to support staff responsible for maintaining a comprehensive chemical inventory, learn to properly characterize, handle and dispose of hazardous and universal waste, and help develop and deliver effective chemical lab safety programs for the University.

Level Scope:

Entry-level professional with limited or no prior experience to contribute on a project or work team. Incumbent learns to use professional concepts to resolve problems of limited scope and complexity under close supervision while achieving day-to-day objectives. Works on developmental assignments that are initially routine in nature, requiring limited judgment and decision making. This level is typically focused on self development. Requires theoretical knowledge through specific education and training.

Essential Functions:
60% of the time the Hazardous Waste Technician must:
  • Assist the Hazardous Waste Officer to ensure compliance with federal regulations.
  • Assist in the development of written procedures and guidance pertaining to research or activities involving hazardous materials and/or processes.
  • Responsible for recommending corrective actions, identifying safety problems, initiating action, and ensuring compliance with regulations.
  • Interact with faculty, staff and students working with or near hazardous materials on a regular basis to offer support.
  • Conduct presentations on hazardous waste, laboratory safety, and compliance requirements.
35% of the time the Hazardous Waste Technician must:
  • Provide support for the Central Store by ordering and receiving chemicals, updating the chemical inventory system, updating safety data sheets, etc.
  • Collaborate with other lab safety support staff that work in the store and laboratories.
  • Conduct lab safety assessments to ensure activities will be using sufficient facilities, engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment
  • Respond to campus incidents and emergencies involving hazardous materials and/or life safety issues.
  • Be willing to participate in a medical surveillance program; pass a security review, and be able to respond to emergency situations at all hours.

5% of the time the Hazardous Waste Technician must:
Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Basic understanding of RCRA and hazardous waste management, applicable chemical and laboratory safety and health standards, and technical information/data sources.
  • Ability to work effectively with a team and independently with minimum supervision and to
communicate effectively orally and in writing. Excellent interpersonal and organizational
skills required.
  • Knowledge of chemical, biological and radiological handling, storage and safety procedures.
  • Ability to conduct industrial hygiene surveys and prepare clear and concise technical reports.
  • The ability to interpret, implement and comply with federal, state and local regulations and
interact with agencies.
  • Good oral presentation, technical writing, and editing skills.
  • Time management skills and ability to work independently
  • Strong to excellent computer skills. Familiar with MS office products, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree or relevant professional experience.
A valid Driver’s License.

Preferred Qualifications:

2 years of experience in a similar field.

Salary of $46,051.20 - $53,539.20/yr; commensurate with experience.
