Blue Origin is Hiring a Systems Engineer II - New Shepard (R38725) Near Los Angeles, CA

This role is a part of New Shepard, a reusable suborbital rocket system designed to take astronauts and research payloads past the Kármán line, the internationally recognized boundary of space. Through operational reusability, New Shepard supports our mission of lowering the cost of access to space.

As part of a hardworking team of diverse specialists, technicians, and engineers, you will apply and expand your systems engineering skills to directly impact the development and expansion of the New Shepard ground systems. These ground systems are essential to New Shepard's mission success and to safe and repeatable space flight!

In this role you will share in the team’s impact on all aspects of requirements, interfaces, verification, and qualification using systems engineering tools and processes to achieve New Shepard program’s mission to make human spaceflight accessible and affordable. As a Systems Engineer you will be involved in system safety evaluations, risk management, test planning, and problem resolution. Having some familiarity with the software development lifecycle would also be helpful for this role.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Working directly with lead systems engineers and technical program managers to plan and prioritize work assignments
  • Authoring, reviewing and releasing system and high-level software requirements with a focus on proper requirement decomposition, making improvements to system level requirements when necessary
  • Act as the systems engineering liaison for the project team, advancing issues where necessary
  • Authoring test plans and test reports, supporting the project throughout the development lifecycle
  • Supporting problem report investigations and dispositions
  • Conducting change impact analysis
  • Supporting regression testing and root cause investigations
  • Crafting state-flow diagrams
  • Updating or authoring FMECAs, FTAs, HETAs
  • Identifying and implementing process improvements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience working with requirements authoring and verification / validation
  • Strong communication skills (verbal & written), ability to work effectively in teams, and ability to manage multiple project assignments in parallel
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to our inclusive culture.
  • Basic understanding of systems engineering processes, tools and methods
  • B.S. in aerospace, electrical, mechanical, or systems engineering; M.S. a plus
  • 2 years proven system development/integration experience – preferably with aerospace or safety critical systems
  • Travel expected less than 10%
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with requirements development for safety critical systems
  • Experience with systems engineering in the aerospace domain
  • Experience with DO-178/DO-254 design assurance levels (DAL)
  • Experience with three or more systems development lifecycle phases (refer to the systems vee)
  • Experience with systems engineering tools such as DOORS classic and/or DNG
  • Experience in reliability, maintainability and supportability analysis and execution
  • Experience across the product life cycle
  • System Safety analysis experience including Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, and Functional Hazard Analysis
  • Experience with the software development lifecycle, processes, and software quality standards
