Blue Origin is Hiring a SLD Senior Systems Engineer Specialty Engineering - Lunar Permanence (R40247) Near Los Angeles, CA

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit. To further Blue Origin's mission of having millions of people living and working in space, we are building the sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the Lunar Surface.

As part of a hardworking team of diverse engineers, you will work on the Systems Engineering team for the Blue Moon Lunar Lander system as the Lead Engineer for specialty engineering. You will be responsible for performing and coordinating specialty engineering for the vehicle per Blue Origin processes and customer requirements. Responsibilities include coordinating with domain experts on testing and analysis related to natural and induced environments, performing functional, non-functional and safety requirements definition, working with subsystem Responsible Engineers to identify controls and mitigations in the vehicle design, and supporting integration, verification, and validation.

You will work directly with NASA and our National Team Partners as part of the Human Landing System (HLS) Sustaining Lunar Development (SLD) program. You will play a key role in developing the Blue Moon Lunar Lander (Link: https://www.blueorigin.com/blue-moon) that will return humans to the Moon and extend human presence permanently beyond the bounds of Earth.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Lead and contribute to the analysis of natural environments (e.g., radiation, charging, gravity, thermal, lunar surface) on Earth, on the Moon, and in space, to inform the design and integration of space systems.
  • Assess induced environments (e.g., induced loads, EMI/EMC, thermal extremes, vibration) to guide the design and engineering of spacecraft.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to integrate materials and processes that can withstand the unique challenges posed by natural and induced environments, ensuring robustness and resilience of space systems.
  • Apply specialty engineering principles to address complex engineering challenges related to aerospace systems, including risk management, reliability, and maintainability considerations.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to other engineers across the program and company.
  • Collaborate across Lunar Systems Engineers to develop methodologies and find opportunities for common processes across projects.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in aerospace engineering, systems engineering, or related field.
  • 8 years of Systems Engineering experience performing activities such as requirements definition, requirements traceability, functional decomposition, integration, verification, and validation.
  • Experience with performing specialty engineering on space systems including one of the following: natural environments, induced environments, materials and processes, reliability and maintainability.
  • Ability to lead and coordinate specialty engineering products across collaborators and experts from varying engineering fields.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills, and ability to communicate technical information effectively.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with performing verification of specialty engineering artifacts.
  • Experience performing compliance assessment of natural and induce environments products against external standards (NASA, SAE, MIL, FAA).
  • Experience with systems engineering tools for requirements management and modeling, such as JAMA and Cameo.
  • Experience with design, development, and certification of spaceflight systems.

About Blue Origin

Blue Origin was founded in 2000 by Jeff Bezos with the vision to enable a future where millions of people are living and working in space to benefit Earth. Blue believes we must protect Earth by moving heavy industries that stress our planet into space, and enable humanity to access space to expand, explore, and find new energy and material resources. Then we can see a dynamic and abundant future for our grandchildrens grandchildren. There is no plan B for Earth. To enable this future, we must build a road to space to lower the cost of getting there. Blue is working on this today by developing... operationally reusable launch vehicles that are safe, reliable and highly available. Every launch vehicle is designed for human spaceflight from the beginning and able to ferry payloads to space. Join the mission to build a road to space - step by step ferociously. #GradatimFerociter More
