Blue Origin is Hiring an Electrical Power Systems, Systems Engineer - Lunar Transportation (R37677) Near Reston, VA

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit. To further Blue Origin's mission of having millions of people living and working in space, we are building the sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from earth to the Lunar Surface.

We are a diverse team of collaborators, doers, and problem-solvers who are relentlessly committed to a culture of safety. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable space flight. Join us in lowering the cost of access to space and enabling Blue Origin’s vision of millions of people living and working in space to benefit Earth.

As part of a diverse and hardworking team, you will contribute to the design of the Electrical Power System (EPS) for future space vehicles. EPS scope includes power generation, storage, regulation, control, and distribution to vehicle subsystems and payloads. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration, and your dedicated commitment and detailed attention will further the cause of safe and repeatable spaceflight.

In this role, you will support Electrical Power System requirements definition, decomposition, ConOps development, interface definition, and traceability of requirements across all hardware levels to ensure the EPS is built for safe and reliable operations in space. You will also represent your system in cross-functional trades and impact studies for architectures and vehicles that you support. You should expect that this foundational part of our vision will require excellent communication and teamwork.

You will work directly with NASA and our National Team Partners as part of the Human Landing System (HLS) Sustaining Lunar Development (SLD) program. You will play a key role in developing the Lunar Transportation system that will return humans to the Moon and extend human presence permanently beyond the bounds of Earth.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Allocate and decompose vehicle functions and requirements to the Electrical Power System, and derive requirements where appropriate
  • Work directly within integrated environments such as JAMA, DOORS, and DOORS Next Gen to manage requirements traceability
  • Work with hardware responsible engineers to develop hardware requirements and interface control definitions
  • Support the alignment, documentation, and consistent implementation of Lunar Permanence System engineering practices across applicable projects
  • Support system and lower-level requirements management, including change control, audits, and coordination with other teams
  • During system engineering reviews of requirement development, decomposition, and allocation activities (requirements traceability), apply definition of customer needs, integration, requirements definition, verification and validation planning, and requirements management
  • Coordinate and collaborate as needed to ensure alignment of V&V activities in accordance with V&V plan
  • Support trades studies and supply knowledge to help down-select spacecraft electrical power system architectures appropriate for mission requirements
  • Create and maintain system diagrams for power distribution, system grounding, and bonding

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical or Computer Engineering, Aerospace or related disciplines
  • Strong understanding of Systems Engineering principles and practices such as requirements definition, requirements traceability, functional decomposition, and verification and validation
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and supply to a culture of collaboration
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

Desired:

  • M.S. in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical subject area
  • 2 years of space systems engineering or fungible experience in other highly complex industry areas (such as aerospace, medical, or automotive)
  • Industry experience in spacecraft design, particularly related to electrical power systems
  • Experience with systems engineering modeling tools, such as Rhapsody or Cameo

About Blue Origin

Blue Origin was founded in 2000 by Jeff Bezos with the vision to enable a future where millions of people are living and working in space to benefit Earth. Blue believes we must protect Earth by moving heavy industries that stress our planet into space, and enable humanity to access space to expand, explore, and find new energy and material resources. Then we can see a dynamic and abundant future for our grandchildrens grandchildren. There is no plan B for Earth. To enable this future, we must build a road to space to lower the cost of getting there. Blue is working on this today by developing... operationally reusable launch vehicles that are safe, reliable and highly available. Every launch vehicle is designed for human spaceflight from the beginning and able to ferry payloads to space. Join the mission to build a road to space - step by step ferociously. #GradatimFerociter More
