Blue Origin is Hiring an Electrical Engineer III - RF Avionics (R40313) Near Seattle, WA

This role is a part of New Shepard, a reusable suborbital rocket system designed to take astronauts and research payloads past the Kármán line – the internationally recognized boundary of space. Through operational reusability, New Shepard supports our mission of lowering the cost of access to space!

As a member of the New Shepard Avionics team, you will design, develop, and verify high-performance hardware for various flight vehicles. Our team is responsible for design, test, integration, and maintenance of all vehicle avionics systems, including flight computers, RF communications, vehicle controls, navigation instrumentation, power systems, astronaut audio and video, data acquisition, and more. You will be integrated with our rocket program and technical leads to drive requirements definition, modeling, analysis, design, test and production release of on-vehicle components and sub-systems. Your responsibilities will encompass electronic requirements, architecture concepts, detailed design, and development. In addition, you will follow avionics designs through formal verification, environmental qualification, release, and participate in flight support activities.

Your responsibilities as a RF Electrical Engineer will go beyond the technical aspects of the position. You will mentor and coach other avionics engineers within the RF team and have ownership of design modification/implementation of team standards, processes, and plans. This role will frequently interact within and external to the NS Avionics Team.

We’re looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and dedication to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical or Computer Engineering, Physics, or related field
  • 5 years of proven experience in the RF design of complex aerospace/space hardware
  • Desire to work hands-on, both independently and as part of a team, throughout the design, verification, qualification, and production phases of the electronic product lifecycle
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to our culture of inclusion.

In addition to the general qualifications above, a RF Electrical Engineer will have expertise in several of the following areas:

  • RF communication subsystem and/or component design, with a strong background in RF principles; specific focus in UHF and S-band RF for vehicle and ground station development and link.
  • Strong background in planning and defining an RF system, including crafting RF link budgets, doing antenna placement planning, and performing site tests.
  • Ability to work with multi-functional teams such as mechanical, ground, and operations to partner for the best design implementation solutions.
  • Collaboration with manufacturing engineers to create and approve assembly drawings.
  • Partnership with production engineering to develop and support sustaining engineering plans and procedures.
  • Development, implementation, and ownership of test procedures, as well as planning and execution for all phases (development, acceptance, and qualification).
  • Experience in grounding and general board layout principles, including EMI/EMC tradeoffs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master of Science in Electrical or Computer Engineering, Physics, or related subject areas.
  • 8 years proven experience in RF design, development, integration, test, and operation of avionics systems or vehicles.
  • Proven experience specifying and crafting high reliability safety-critical electronics; familiarity with IPC-A-600/610, DO-254 and similar standards.
  • Background with launch vehicle hardware development, integration, and test.
