Blue Mountain Community College is Hiring a Professional Tutor, TRiO Dept. Near Pendleton, OR

Position Summary

Professional Tutor provides group and individual tutoring support to students, both individually, in small groups, online, and through Zoom for various levels of math, science and/or writing courses. Performs all functions and activities within the guidelines and philosophy set forth in the BMCC Mission, Vision and Strategic Plan.

Essential Functions

  • Provide tutoring support to participants completing basic college requirements. A sampling of the courses the tutor may apply for and be approved to support are: biology, chemistry, quantitative literacy, math in society elementary algebra, intermediate algebra, college algebra, elementary functions, introduction to probability and statistics, calculus, microbiology, anatomy & physiology, multiple writing levels and more.
  • Coordinate with various instructors to provide targeted and timely support.
  • Provide exam reviews for students as needed.
  • Prepare study guide handouts for students.
  • Contribute to program planning and service enhancement efforts.
  • Participate in periodic staff training and development provided by the College and/or the project.
  • Assist with data entry for Drop Out Detective, Weekly Check-Ins and other student support communications and filing.
  • Maintains sensitivity, understanding, and respect for a diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, ability, economic, cultural, ideological, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Individuals must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities:

  • Must be well organized, able to prioritize work and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to empathize with the students and respond appropriately.
  • Ability to operate selected software programs relating to the position.
  • Must have the ability to clearly articulate need-to-know information to students, staff, and the public.
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills. Must be able to interact successfully with individuals at all levels of the college.
  • Excellent oral and communication skills required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse students and excellent subject-matter tutoring skills.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Teaching experience.

Part Time:

This is a part time position up to 10 hours per week as needed; weekday mornings. Part time employees earn 1 hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked.

Pay: 23.60 per hour
