Job Purpose:

The Sr Electrical and Controls Engineer provides electrical, controls and automation leadership to develop and implement site projects, support breakdowns, recommend engineering solutions, and manage systems obsolescence. This position supports both plant and corporate initiatives to reduce downtime, cycle time, business risk, and manufacturing costs, while improving performance, and overall value to the organization. This position is a key leadership position within the engineering organization. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Responsible for the overall supervision and development of controls engineers and instrumentation/controls technicians to maintain the performance and availability of Distributed Control Systems (DCS), programmable logic controllers (PLCs), Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs), Variable Frequency Drives (VFD), process sensors and instrumentation and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA & MES) software, based on Blommer control standards.
  • Perform high level troubleshooting, in-depth critical thinking, and utilize available internal and external resources to solve network, automation, or process system break downs.
  • Improve equipment and system performance and resiliency by assessing, identifying, schematically designing, coding, and testing complex program modifications. This includes improvements to DCS, PLC’s logic, HMI’s programs, and servo controller’s logic.
  • Engineering project support from conception through startup including equipment specification development for instrumentation and control systems, write Request For Proposals (RFP), create system architecture diagrams, create HMI visualization, generate cost estimates, and perform Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT). This includes the supervision and coordination of outside contractors as necessary. 
  • Support and participate in internal continuous process improvement and automation efforts.
  • Support the on-call Instrumentation and Controls Technician performing VPN based remote access support for production stoppages.
  • Coordinate data integration as well as assist in the analysis of this data from diverse enterprise systems with plant floor data from SCADA systems. This requires interfacing production and other ERP systems to the plant network as well as maintaining and improving the data from historian systems.
  • Maintain an automation and control systems upgrade plan which mitigates obsolescence, proliferates site automation to support planned growth, and is incorporated into the yearly capital budget.
  • Responsible for mentoring electrical technicians in maintaining site electrical power distribution systems, their upgrade, energy consumption reduction, load shedding, emergency power, UPS, battery charging and backups systems.
  • Provide technical mentorship and training to plant personnel.
  • Effectively communicate with peers, supervisors, and upper management daily.
  • Operate within the core values of respect and care for others.

Qualifications:  

  • BS degree electronics, electrical, general engineering, or industrial instrumentation with subjects on robotics and controls systems required.
  • Minimum Seven (7) years of progressive integration, design, and controls project experience.
  • In-depth knowledge and prior experience of many of the systems listed below:
    • Siemens PLCs, PCS7 control systems,
    • Modicon PLC software
    • HMI software for Siemens, Modicon, and CTC
    • VFD’s
    • Load cell-based weighing systems
    • Coriolis Flowmeters
    • Inductive Automation’s Ignition SCADA
    • Kepware/KepServer
    • MicroSoft Windows Server
    • VMware ESXi
    • Virtual Machine configuration for controls system implementation.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD for P&ID, wiring diagram creation, and modifications.
  • Strong background in Electrical Power distribution systems for a facility.
  • Experience with using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office including PowerPoint and Excel.
