POSITION TITLE: Director of Communications
REPORTS TO: Chief Executive Officer
CLASSIFICATION: Regular, Non-exempt, Part-time
OVERVIEW
The Director of Marketing and Communications will develop, lead, and manage all communications and oversee
marketing efforts for BlackRock Center for the Arts (BlackRock). The Director serves as the primary resource for brand
development and strategy, marketing efforts across all departments, public relations, web content and development,
and creative design. Additionally, the Director centrally supports the communication needs of BlackRock’s narrative,
divisions, and departments to ensure that all messaging reflects our values, brand, reputation, and community in a clear
and vibrant way. The ideal candidate will be committed to and exemplify BlackRock’s mission to bring performing and
visual arts experiences to diverse audiences and provide accessible opportunities to engage in the arts.

BlackRock Center for the Arts (BRCA), the leading venue for the performing and visual arts in Upper Montgomery
County, MD, provides the community with the highest level of quality performances, free gallery exhibitions, and arts
education classes in a welcoming and intimate setting close to home.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Director of Marketing and Communications will:

  • Serve as a member of BlackRock’s leadership team to develop and oversee the implementation of strategies for
BlackRock’s arts programs to elevate brand visibility that aligns with strategic priorities.
  • Develop the annual communication plan that conveys a cohesive narrative, enhances, and expands brand
equity, and establishes distinct thought leadership and services aligned to BlackRock’s mission.
  • Develop and oversee implementation of a strategic marketing, communication, and sales plan that expands
BlackRock’s audience and meets revenue goals and increased earned media.
  • Develop the annual department budget in alignment with the annual communication plan;
  • Ensure staff implementing the annual plan bring to life the mission and vision of BlackRock through on-going

story-telling that reaches both current and prospective students, performers, artists, employees, donors,
partners, and community leaders.

  • Establish a relationship with members of the press, draft and manage the approval of all press announcements,
and distribute to the press outlets;
  • Develop membership and campaign collateral in collaboration with Development Director.
  • Design and support development and implementation of ongoing outreach, social media, and communicational
collateral.
  • Identify and support an intern or other part-time role to manage web and social media channels to promote the
narrative aligned with overall strategy and priorities.
  • Solidify a brand and voice with accompanying tools implemented across the organization.
  • Work collaboratively with departments to ensure consistency in voice.
  • Develop and implement data-driven reports to demonstrate ROI of marketing investments for the company.
  • Support the design, branding, narrative, and maintenance of BlackRock’s website.
  • Assume other responsibilities as assigned.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
  • 5-10 years of experience in a marketing and communications role
  • BA/BS in a related field, Masters preferred
  • Strong strategic thinking, critical thinking and proactive problem-solving ability
  • Impeccable organizational skills, ability to meet and encourage others to meet deadlines, attention to detail, and
ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Effective written, editing, research, oral, and presentation communication skills
  • A high level of attention to detail, combined with the ability to be flexible, take initiative, and work
collaboratively
  • An understanding of and keen interest in the arts, cultural diversity, racial equity, and community social services
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. Some experience with Sharepoint and One Drive
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop)
  • Proficiency with web management software (e.g., WordPress, Wix, SquareSpace, etc.)
  • Proficiency with email marketing software and experience in developing email campaigns (e.g., MailChimp,
Constant Contact)
  • Experience shooting and directing video content preferred
  • Ability to understand, translate, and drive messaging to a diverse range of audiences
  • Apply writing style and techniques appropriate for different audiences
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule of evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Superior project management skills and the ability to handle multiple activities simultaneously.
  • Creative thinking with an ability to use data to inform decisions
  • Ability to work well with a team, both as a lead and in a supporting role
  • Positive attitude and friendly spirit, culturally sensitive, and a sense of humor is essential
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability to work independently and in a diverse team-based environment
  • Other duties as assigned
