Job Summary

Minimally supervised; performs heavy manual labor; drives truck and operates other equipment to maintain County roads; drives truck equipped with dump body to transport and dump loose materials such as sand, gravel, crushed rock, coal, or bituminous paving materials, concrete finishing and concrete forming.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Must be capable of regular and predictable attendance at a specified location in order to perform assigned tasks.
• Sweeps loose dirt from pavement to prepare for laying surface.
• Operates air compressor and jackhammer to break up pavement and rocks.
• Spreads asphalt over surface and tamps in patches.
• Erects and maintains roads signs. Erects and dismantles barricades.
• Operates County equipment as necessary including hand and power tools.
• Drives farm-type tractor with mower attachment to cut grass and weeds.
• Performs snow removal.
• Moves hand and foot controls to jerk truck forward and backward to loosen and dump material adhering to body.
• Loads truck by hand or by operating mechanical loader.
• Performs a variety of manual labor and other duties as directed including construction forming steel and concrete placement and finishing concrete for bridges and culvert construction.
• Follows proper safety procedures and takes pro-active measures to avoid potential harm to equipment and personnel.
• Performs routine inspections of equipment to ensure safety and operability.
• Other duties as assigned

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

• Supervision is received from Road Superintendent and Road Foreman.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

• No Functional or administrative supervision is exercised over support staff.

Minimum Required Qualifications

• Must be willing to comply with Secondary Roads residency policy within six months of hire date: live within Black Hawk County or within a 20-mile radius of the Longfellow Shop located at 1329 Longfellow Ave, Waterloo.
• High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
• Six (6) months or more related experience and/or training required.
• Must have and maintain a valid Iowa Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Type A and be insurable under the County's guidelines.
• Must have valid Iowa CDL Type A – Tanker Endorsement or able to obtain the endorsement within six (6) months from date of hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities -

• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
