BLACK DIAMOND EQUIPMENT LTD is Hiring a Design Engineer Near SALT LAKE CITY, UT

Description

The Design Engineer works in tight coordination with the product team including; Product Line Manager, Product Developer, Quality Engineering, and Industrial Designers, on all aspects of design for each product they are assigned. The Design Engineer is specifically responsible for meeting the needs of the business and users by delivering on the concept, strength, physical layout, quality, durability, manufacturability, dimensioning/tolerancing, material selection and manufacturing processes, and other aspects of the product(s) assigned. Design Engineers work in close collaboration with the Business Unit Director, RnD leadership, and the greater BD product team, to ensure solutions meet Black Diamond design ethos, guidelines, and expectations. Design Engineer draws from years of experience to show an increasing level of autonomy and quality of work.

Essential Functions:

Authorized and responsible for continuously improve upon and performing all duties according to BD Inc’s Quality, Safety, and Employee Policies and procedures: 

  1. Create in-line and new designs for projects ranging from simple to very large and complex
  2. Generate concepts through brainstorming and other creative processes 
  3. Create CAD models of parts, sub-assemblies and assemblies
  4. Select appropriate materials and manufacturing processes
  5. Analyze all parts, sub-assemblies, and assemblies to ensure designs are adequate for the intended use
  6. Perform geometric dimensioning and tolerancing for all parts, sub-assemblies, and assemblies of each product designed
  7. Generate, in cooperation with a Quality Assurance Engineer, a complete test plan to validate products
  8. Work closely with the Industrial Designer and the Developer to ensure the selected vendor is building parts and products to the design intent.
  9. Follow and adhere to the timeline requirements of the assigned project
  10. Process design change orders in a timely and accurate manner
  11. Research new materials and technologies for potential use for Black Diamond products
  12. Travel domestically and internationally to conduct research, work with vendors, attend tradeshows and other job-related functions

Requirements

Education:

  • Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or other closely related field
  • Preferred: Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or other closely related field

Work Experience:

  • Required: 3 years of post-graduation experience in a Mechanical Engineering Role

Alternative Qualifications:

  • 15 years of direct experience in product design-related field in consumer products will substitute for the minimum degree requirement.

Skills and general experience:

  • Proficient in Solid modeling techniques. Growing proficiency and efficiency in surface modeling, complex assembly, GD&T knowledge, and assembly tech pack build-outs. Should be able to run static linear FEA analysis to influence design decisions.
  • Strong understanding of engineering mathematics and how they relate to static and dynamic loading applied to real-world design problems. Increased engineering intuition.
  • Solid understanding of alloy and polymer decision-making with regard to manufacturing processes used, environmental conditions
  • Proficient in multiple hands-on prototyping skills ranging in fidelity. Understanding of how prototype processes and resources change when projects shift from low-volume to high-volume prototyping
  • Increasing the level of application in processes specific to your projects and design tasks.
  • Understand what level of testing is needed at each stage of a project to gather the information needed to make design decisions and concept direction. Ability to create robust DFMEA models.
  • Able to connect solutions from prior experience towards solving new challenges.
  • Able to use prior experience to estimate timing on tasks and prioritize work efficiently to deliver to multiple stakeholders. Knows when to elevate issues to the team and/or manager.

Required licenses:

  • Drivers License, Passport.

  • General physical requirements: Sedentary work; occasional medium work
  • Visual acuity requirements: Close vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus
  • Motion and sensory requirements: Reaching, typing, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, sitting
  • Physical working conditions: Both inside and outside environments
