We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Director of Engineering to lead our talented team of Engineers. The ideal candidate will possess a strong aptitude for technology, be hungry to learn, and have a relentless drive for excellence. As a key leadership team member, the Director of Engineering drives innovation and competitive advantage through technology and its creative application to business goals. You partner closely with the CTO and senior leadership to execute our technical vision, strategies, and plans for growth and expansion—ensuring software development teams align with overall business objectives and goals. You are an architect and technical leader who defines, evangelizes, and achieves our vision.

THIS IS A FULLY REMOTE, FULL-TIME POSITION - SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES WILL BE REQUIRED TO WORK FROM HOME.

Compensation: 

We are committed to providing competitive pay and benefits that are in line with industry standards. We analyze and carefully consider several factors when determining compensation, including skills, qualifications, and professional experience, which can cause your compensation to vary. This role has an annual targeted total compensation range of $160,000-$220,000, which includes variable compensation (bonus) eligibility.

About the Engineering Team:

Our Engineering team’s mission is to promote a data-driven decision-making culture to solve homelessness. We do this by combining a team of experts in development, analytics, database infrastructure, and integration with social services experience. From Feature Releases into Clarity Human Services to development project initiatives, to system infrastructure and QA engineering, we play an integral role in the ongoing stability and enhancement of Clarity Human Services.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Leadership: As the Director of Engineering, you lead the technological development of our products, ensuring that the engineering teams are aligned with the business objectives and goals. You establish the vision and direction for the development team, creating a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement. You lead the department’s transformation into lean, high-performing agile teams that deliver software products of the highest quality.
  • Scaling: You are responsible for scaling the software development teams by identifying and hiring the right mix of on-shore and off-shore resources. You will work closely with the CTO to develop and implement recruiting strategies, conduct interviews and assessments of candidates, and evaluate and select the best talent for the organization.
  • Data Analysis: You use predictive modeling and analytics to "tell a story" with our data. You lead the development of data-driven decision-making processes, enabling the organization to make informed decisions based on accurate, relevant, and timely data.
  • Production Oversight: You oversee all engineering, including front-end, back-end, and data engineering teams, ensuring that projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. You work closely with cross-functional teams to establish project goals, objectives, and timelines, providing guidance, support, and feedback throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Communication: You communicate with team members, stakeholders, and customers to ensure Bitfocus' technologies are used appropriately. You provide updates, progress reports, and status updates to senior management, customers, and other stakeholders, ensuring they are informed of progress, issues, and risks.
  • Budgeting: You develop, track, and control the development of annual operating and capital budgets for purchasing, staffing, and operations. You will work closely with finance, accounting, and other stakeholders to ensure that budgets are realistic, achievable, and aligned with business objectives.
  • Internal Collaboration: You work with other departments to use new technologies to streamline company policies and rules. You will collaborate with product management, sales, marketing, and other stakeholders to identify opportunities for innovation, automation, and optimization, enabling Bitfocus to maintain its competitive advantage in the market.
  • External Collaboration: Build and maintain relationships with external technology partners, vendors, and service providers, ensuring the company is leveraging the latest technologies and best practices in software engineering.
  • Security: You develop and direct safeguards to reduce the risk of outside breaches and protect sensitive internal and external client information. You work closely with IT and compliance teams to establish and enforce security policies, procedures, and best practices, ensuring that Bitfocus' data and information are protected against internal and external threats.
  • Planning: You lead sprint planning, delivery, and managing releases. You work closely with the development teams to ensure that sprint goals and objectives are achievable and aligned with business objectives, providing guidance, support, and feedback throughout the sprint lifecycle.
  • Procedures: You ensure consistent best practices, processes, and procedures for software development in collaboration with the quality assurance and DevOps teams. You will work closely with the product management team to establish and enforce Agile software development lifecycle (SDLC) processes and procedures, ensuring that software products are developed and maintained to the highest quality standards.

  • Hands-On: You Should be able to take a hands-on approach to your work while displaying a strong work ethic. This includes the ability to lead by example, roll up your sleeves, and dive into technical work when needed.
  • Agile: You should have experience using agile methodologies in sometimes ambiguous situations. This includes quickly adapting and iterating to changing business needs and technical requirements.
  • Mentorship: You should enjoy developing team members by providing hands-on technical leadership. This includes coaching and mentoring team members to help them grow and develop their technical skills.

Qualifications:

  • Proven understanding of modern technologies, tools, and practices and the ability to apply them to business goals. This includes using a deep knowledge of emerging technologies, software development methodologies, and industry best practices to identify opportunities for growth and expansion.
  • Proven experience developing, leading, and effectively communicating with international, multidisciplinary teams in an agile environment.
  • At least seven (7) years of experience in a hands-on management role in a software engineering environment. This includes experience leading teams of developers, managing budgets, and delivering projects on time and within budget.
  • At least ten (10) years of experience building applications that utilize modern application architectures. This includes a deep understanding of microservices, RESTful APIs, and other web-based technologies.
  • A strong software engineering background, including experience deploying cloud-native applications with AWS, managing large MariaDB/MySQL implementations, developing applications using PHP 7 and backend frameworks, developing frontends using Angular or other JavaScript frameworks, and building and scaling APIs.
  • Experience completing a refactor/rewriting project involving migrating a monolithic legacy application to a modern architecture.
  • Experience working with large-scale databases and data warehouses. This includes a deep understanding of database design, optimization, and management, as well as experience with data warehousing and analytics.
  • Experience implementing and maintaining compliance programs for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Service Organization Control Type 2 (SOC 2), or similar standards.
