Birthing Beautiful Communities is Hiring a Doula Near Cleveland, OH

Postpartum Support Doula

Classification : Exempt

Salary Grade / Level / Family / Range : $50,000 - $60,000

Reports to : Doula Managerand Senior Director of Programs & Systems

Overview :

The Postpartum Support Doula will serve mothers and families already enrolled in Birthing Beautiful Communities with a focus on providing them with emotional, physical, and informational support.

The PSD will provide families with culturally appropriate emotional support to assist with the transitions of the postpartum period and having a new baby.

While doing so, the PSD respects the parenting style of the family, provides opportunities for the mother to ask questions or express concerns, and provides encouragement.

The PSD provides physical support as the family recovers and grows more comfortable with their new roles. The techniques for support should be individualized to the family’s specific needs but may include providing opportunities for rest, personal care, and healing.

The PSD can also demonstrate newborn care, assist with breastfeeding, provide care to older children and be there to fill in the gaps as necessary.

The PSD can facilitate communication between the mother and her care provider and work as an advocate throughout her working relationship with the mother and family.

In doing so, the PSD has a comprehension of her limitations and, when necessary, will provide appropriate referrals to other individuals or providers.

The PSD focuses on mothering the mother by ensuring the mother receives proper nutrition, sufficient fluids, and rest so that she can heal.

The PSD is also a companion who listens to the mother and provides options, resources, and referrals so that there can be a reduction in feelings of anxiety, stress, and isolation.

A secondary function is to ensure the program can run efficiently and has the support of all Perinatal Support Doulas. The PSD will be asked to understand office function and can carry out day-to-day administrative activities effectively, including data reporting and client encounter case notes required to sustain the organization.

The PSD is required to attend team meetings and training. This role requires training with little to no absences, some travel, and organization to ensure time management and modeling for clients.

This person will work with the administrative team to ensure the successful operations of all Birthing Beautiful Communities functions.

Volunteering is expected to push the program forward.

Job Description :

  • Able to serve clients with different cultural backgrounds and needs
  • Data reporting
  • Aware of the community she serves and able to do some community outreach
  • Create a Postpartum Plan’ with the Client
  • Conduct postpartum consultations
  • Provides postpartum support as outlined in training
  • Able to attend appointments with clients during the postpartum period.
  • Provides one on one and group newborn education sessions for their client and family
  • Provides support during the postpartum period for up to one year
  • Encourage Breastfeeding and provide some basic peer breastfeeding counseling
  • Assist client in creating a Self Sufficiency Plan
  • Provides sex and reproductive health education
  • Provide contraception education
  • Manage a filing system for assigned clients
  • Recording information and notes for every client
  • Remain aware of BBC schedules and calendars of classes
  • Update paperwork and maintain documents and word processing
  • Maintain inventory supplies as needed
  • Maintaining office equipment as needed
  • Creating, maintaining, and entering information into databases
  • Assist in creating, and writing class materials such as PowerPoint presentations
  • Assist with classes for clients and future Postpartum Perinatal Support Doulas
  • Attend staff meetings and professional development and assist as required
  • Attend meetings, conferences, community events, and workshops pertaining to BBC, BBC work, or maternal / child health as available.

Requirements

  • Successfully complete BBC’s Perinatal Support training class
  • Social-emotional training certification
  • Knowledge of and experience working with pregnant women and women with small children
  • Culturally aware and understanding of systemic racism and its effects
  • Proficient with Mac and PC, word processing systems such as Microsoft Office Suite, Google Office, and email
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Flexibility in schedule to serve clients on an as-needed basis

Physical Demands

  • The work performed is 60% field work and may require standing, sitting, squatting / stooping / bending, walking, light carrying, light cleaning, running errands, and climbing stairs
  • The other 40% of this position is conducted in the office (meetings, paperwork, and data entry)
  • Out-of-town and overnight travel is also required on occasion
