Description

POSITION SUMMARY 

As a member of the Birk Manufacturing Quality Control team you will be responsible for inspecting, measuring and testing individual products to Birk Manufacturing and/ or customer specifications and requirements. This includes, but is not limited to, incoming inspection of raw material, in-process verification and inspection of products and process, and overall inspection of final products using visual and mechanical test equipment. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Essential Functions Statement(s) 

  • Manage, control and prioritize Birk Manufacturing, Inc. inspection process. 
  • Examine incoming raw materials, customer supplied materials, and/or any other incoming goods before releasing to inventory/ production.
  • Perform in-line inspection of semi-completed products
  • Perform Final Inspection of Birk Manufacturing outgoing final products
  • Operate special test instruments/equipment.
    • Hypot/Dielectric test using a Hypot meter
    • Resistance tests using a multi-meter
    • Immersed water testing
    • Dimensional tests using Steel Rulers, Micrometers, Verniers, Calipers, Radius Pin Gauges
    • Microscope for visual inspections
      • When looking for air bubbles, contamination, bridging, pinholes, missing circuit trace, etc.
    • Pull tests of raw material and finished products
    • Freezer/ refrigerator product and/ or item testing
  • Perform First Piece Inspections/First Article Reports (FAIR)
    • Inspection against all dimensions and specified notes on specification sheets and/or prints/drawings pertaining to specific product.
      • Including, but not limited to, resistance check, dielectric strength test, pull test, visual inspection and electrical inspection of installed components (fuses, thermistors, RTDs, T-stats, etc.) 
    • Ensure there is an up-to-date First Piece Article for all continuous and new production runs.
      • Including up-to-date paperwork, proper identification of first article, proper location, etc.
  • Ensure product is compliant to UL, CSA and RoHS requirements when applicable.
    • Product must have correct identification that is clear and legible.
  • Consult and confer with Engineering Department when discrepancies, possible defects, borderline judgment calls need to be made.
  • Consult and confer with Production Manager when a repetitive defect is found to make sure defect is identified, corrected and prevented for future orders.
  • Inspect and investigate returned products from customers. (RMA’s)
    • Giving input/suggestions to QA Manager on rework, reason for failure/defect
  • Where applicable, write, verify and update QC Inspection Instructions for specific part numbers. 
  • Assisting co-workers, if possible, to help them produce a quality product. 
  • Make disposition on non-conforming Birk products and incoming raw material
    • Scrap, return to production, return to supplier, pass/accept, disposition from engineering
  • Accept/Reject First Piece inspections and return to production for go-ahead on production run OR return back to production for rework.
  • Dispute returned products with customers and their complaints.
    • Only if units are returned and after rigorous inspection at Birk no defects are found.

 SKILLS & ABILITIES 

· Have a working understanding of quality management systems. 

· Have a working understanding of the principles and tools of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement tools within a low volume, high quality manufacturing facility

· Familiarity with Calibration Tolerances

· Familiarity with FMEA, Control Plans, FEMA, PDCA

· Familiarity with Lean/ 6S/ Six Sigma/ Kaizen

Education: 

· High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED)

Experience: 

  • Experience with Electrical Properties and Measurements (Resistance, Ohms, Watts, Amps, Multi-meter, Dielectrical Strength (Hypot meter), Caliper, Verniers, Temperature Measurements – Fahrenheit Celsius)
  • Experience with measurements; inches, millimeters, fractions, decimal points and conversion factors.
  • Experience reading schematics, drawings and blueprints

Requirements

Computer Skills:

  • Familiarity with; 

o Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

o Data Entry

Certifications & Licenses (NOT REQUIRED):

  • Certified Internal Auditor Training
  • Lean & Six Sigma Training
