Description

The Associate Staff Scientist is a salaried position with laboratory leadership responsibilities. The Associate Staff Scientist works to meet deadlines in a dynamic environment and has the temperament to operate proactively and collaboratively in a team, in support of research and development activities. Tasks will focus on molecular and microbiological experiments and procedures (e.g., nucleic acid extraction, serial dilution, PCR, bacterial and fungal culture, etc.) with associated collection, analysis, verification and recording of data in accordance with established protocols and work instruction documents, regulations, safety requirements, and the quality system. Work is primarily collaborative and requires the ability to communicate and coordinate with peers and supervisor(s) effectively and respectfully.

The position requires expertise in laboratory technical and organizational skills, attention to detail, critical thinking, troubleshooting and problem-solving, data analysis, and a dedication to the mission and goals of the department and BioFire. The Associate Staff Scientist is expected to self-direct to accomplish department goals with minimal supervision. The Associate Staff Scientist will also supervise research associates and interns/trainees.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform all work in compliance with company policy and within the guidelines of bioMérieux’ Quality System.
  • Follow policies and procedures and conduct oneself professionally and in accordance with the bioMérieux Employment Handbook
  • Ensure data integrity and accurate record-keeping by collecting, recording (e.g., via electronic laboratory notebooks and study worksheets), analyzing, and verifying data in compliance with SOPs, WIDs, and Study Protocols.
  • Oversee use and maintenance of laboratory equipment, supplies/inventory, and lab spaces according to operational, quality control, and safety requirements, protocols, SOPs, and WIDs.
  • Demonstrate expertise in routine or complex calculations and laboratory techniques, to include solution formulation, dilution, microbial culture and enumeration, nucleic acid extraction, nucleic acid quantification using real-time and/or digital PCR, as well as graphing data and statistical analyses to evaluate nucleic acid extraction and assay performance.
  • Work in a Biosafety Level 2/2( ) environment with potentially pathogenic microbes, patient samples, and body fluids using sterile technique for contamination and infection control.
  • Maintain and instruct others in the use of laboratory databases (e.g., for tracking of reagents, organism strains, samples, specimens, etc.)
  • Act as an exemplary lab citizen and team member. Proactively teach, coordinate, collaborate, and communicate with supervisors and peers within and across teams and functional groups for lab activities, cleaning, equipment use, specific assigned tasks and projects, and sharing of knowledge, skills, and ideas
  • Lead investigations and complex experiments, as well as protocol and process development, optimization, revision, and execution. Play an active role in anticipating, identifying, and mitigating risks or hazards in processes, experiments, and projects
    • Use data and critical thinking to evaluate performance and/or deficiencies in products and experiments. Propose strategies and solutions for technical and operational issues when deficiencies are identified.
    • Develop and maintain a technical, system-level understanding of BioFire products.
    • Train others on laboratory and departmental practices and procedures. Demonstrate good coordination and communication with direct report.
    • Exercise good judgment and prioritization in time and task management, experimental design and execution, and presentation of results and outcomes to peers and leadership. Be accountable for task completion and follow-through to maintain project goals and timelines.
    • Demonstrate proficiency in written and oral communication of results, study protocols and reports.
    • Demonstrate expertise in tools and techniques in molecular biology principles, microbiology and infectious disease diagnostics.
    • Attend and participate in all assigned meetings, including company and group meetings.
    • Attend and participate in learning and training opportunities.
    • Participate in scientific conferences.

1. This position requires excellent written and oral communication skills.
2. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability work with a wide variety of people (physicians, laboratory directors, laboratory staff, etc) involved in conducting the clinical studies.
3. The ability to work closely with Associate Director of Clinical Affairs to identify and communicate areas of technical, schedule, and budget.
4. Excellent organizational skills are essential.
Training and Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least eight years’ experience, preferably in a clinical or industrial setting.
  • Master’s degree in biology, microbiology or equivalent and six years of relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must demonstrate expertise in molecular biology, microbiology, infectious disease, and clinical laboratory diagnostics.
  • Mastery of common laboratory procedures.
  • Ability to independently manage projects and employees and report areas of risk as they arise.
  • Competent in experimental design and data analysis, including statistical assessments.
  • Demonstrated skills in scientific/technical writing and oral presentations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word).
