The Railroad Conductor is an entry level position in the refinery. The Conductor ensures that railroad tracks are adequate, functional and conform to industry standards and management's safety instructions. A Conductor oversees the movement of rail cars and visually checks switch conditions and routes. The Conductor also relays radio and hand signals affecting the movement of trains.
Duties:
• Maintain Conductor certification
• Daily railcar pre-work safety and planning meeting with emphasis on the Railroad Operating Rules and Safety Procedures.
• Direct communication with the Shift foreman
• Daily inspection of locomotive operating systems such as fuel level, air system, brakes, oil level, water level and correct start up/shut down procedures, etc.
• Daily inspection record keeping in locomotive cab
• Blue Card up to date and valid
• Carefully and efficiently move hazardous laden rail cars through rail yard and across public roads to be placed in designated areas as required.
• Proper radio communication
• Perform weekly track inspection and maintenance. Keep accurate and current records.
• Track repairs completed with accurate up to date record keeping
• Check for any obstructions left by loader/pumper from the loading/unloading processes such as wheel chocks, loading arms, ramps and hoses or environmental obstruction of switches/rails from snow fall or wind blown debris.
• Direct communication with Shift Foreman, Pumper and Loader
• Keep rail yard safe for Union Pacific and Utah Railway daily switching
• Occasionally recheck loader/pumpers work for properly tightened dome lids, belly caps and all valves on car along with proper placards.
• Always be aware of condition of car placards and securement of each car
• Inspect railcars for signs of damage or tampering, check placards and stenciling
• Occasionally gauge cars and get samples
• Double check your paper work for any errors
• Rail yard security
• Daily rail yard inspection walk around
• Look for any signs of damage or unauthorized personnel
Education and Experience Requirements
• High school diploma or GED
• No experience necessary
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Requirements
• Must be safety conscience.
• Be able to work shift work: days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Be able to safely climb on and off of railcars.
• Be able to lift 50 LBS.
• Work well with others.
