Big Bend Community College is Hiring a FT Faculty - English Instructor (Temporary) Near Moses Lake, WA

Big Bend Community College (BBCC), a rural college serving vibrant, culturally rich communities in the Columbia Basin of Central Washington invites applications for a full-time English Instructor in the college's English Department. This is a temporary, one-year replacement position. This position is part of the four-person English Department within the larger Humanities Division. We are looking for someone prepared for and interested in teaching English composition.

Salary placement for candidates with a master's degree and five (5) years of employment experience directly related to the position begins at $77,094 for a 173-day contract, September to June. Additional degrees, experience, and state-funded and negotiated increases will increase the salary. This is a union represented position subject to a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Placement on the Salary Index Matrix (SIM) is in accordance with the BBCC Faculty Association Negotiated Agreement.

Essential responsibilities will include, but not be limited to the following:
  • Prepare and teach classes in English Composition. This may include day, evening, hybrid and online classes. Teaching load will primarily include English Composition I and Composition II but may include other English courses such as Technical Writing, Creative Writing, Literature, and various other courses depending on applicant qualifications.
  • Provide access to students through posted office hours, electronic communication, and other appropriate methods.
  • Instruct, assist, and motivate students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies and informed substantive feedback on assignments and discussions.
  •  Support efforts to promote student success and retention by providing guidance and referring students to appropriate campus resources and support services as needed.
  • Participate as an active member of working committees dealing with instruction, college-wide and department assessment, student matters and/or college related concerns.
  • Work effectively with colleagues and students of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and be a positive contributing member of the campus community.
  • Provide advice and support for English adjunct faculty in conjunction with the department.
  • Maintain positive and effective communications with students, faculty, administration and staff.
  • Foster a flexible, healthy learning environment with respect for student diversity.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to professional growth, development, and conduct.
  • Other duties as agreed to with division chair or administrator.
Minimum Qualifications
At the time of application, all applicants must possess the following:
  • A Master's degree or Master of Fine Arts degree in Rhetoric and Composition, English, Writing, or other closely related field from a regionally accredited institution. 
Additional Desirable Qualifications:
  • Successful teaching experience at the post-secondary level (university, community college, or dual enrollment). 
  • Teaching experience at the community college level. 
  • Experience teaching English composition courses.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the role of the community college in education.
  • Experience implementing innovative teaching methods such as flipped instruction, coordinated studies, team teaching, active learning, or computer-aided instruction.
  • Experience implementing strategies to improve student success and retention.
  • Experience with online learning, hybrid courses, and learning management systems 
  • Demonstrated multicultural experience (fluency in other languages, work experience, or literary/cultural/travel experience) which add breadth and depth to teaching.

TEACHING DEMONSTRATION:

Applicants selected for a final interview may be required to give a short (approximately 10-15 minute) teaching demonstrationon a topic selected by the college.
