BHC Consultants is Hiring an Engineering Technician/Construction Inspector Near Seattle, WA

GENERAL SUMMARY

We are currently seeking an Engineering Technician/Construction Inspector to support both field inspection/observation and in-office engineering. The incumbent will monitor and inspect construction activities to ensure that procedures and materials comply with plans, specifications, standards, and permit requirements, prepare field reports, and support engineering activities through field data gathering and office support activities. The incumbent will independently examine the workmanship of contractors to ensure conformance with plans and specifications and acquire basic knowledge and develop skills to apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria to perform tasks associated with conventional utility infrastructure design projects.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES

  • Monitors civil construction (water, sewer, and stormwater, earthwork, paving, etc.) work in progress and completed work to verify that procedures and materials used conform to the requirements of the associated drawings and specifications.
  • Works directly with construction contractors, engineers, and project owners to verify compliance with contract requirements.
  • Independently coordinates schedules with BHC, project owner, and contractor staff.
  • Attends preconstruction and job progress meetings as necessary to comply with project requirements.
  • Conducts thorough on-site assessments of ongoing work to aid in verifying adherence to drawings and specifications.
  • Drives to project sites throughout the Puget Sound Area.
  • Thoroughly records all on-site observations encompassing construction progress, personnel, equipment, materials, and any noted shortcomings. These details are diligently compiled within daily observation reports.
  • Timely completes and submits daily observation reports for designated project(s).
  • Documents deviations and changes on construction drawings to record as-constructed conditions, and prepares construction record drawings together with engineering and drafting staff.
  • Provides in-office engineering support with preparing and editing spreadsheets, cost estimates, drawings, specifications, permit applications and reports to support water, surface water and wastewater utility studies, evaluations, engineering reports, comprehensive plans, and review of developer plans
  • Demonstrates adept communication skills essential for effectively interacting with and representing project owners and contractors.
  • Engages seamlessly with colleagues, the public, project owners, and contractors, fostering productive working relationships.
  • Possesses a comprehensive understanding of and adheres strictly to all site safety protocols and maintains a safe work environment.

 SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS

  • Interprets drawing and specifications to communicate requirements and observed deviations from specified requirements with contractors to ensure compliance with requirements and regulations governing construction.
  • Prepares sketches of and takes quality photos of construction installations that deviate from drawings and records those changes on record drawings.
  • May be required to work with multiple jurisdiction and client documentation software systems (i.e. Accela, SmartGov etc.) for input and tracking of inspection records and notation. Training will be provided on the systems as needed.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent; associate or bachelor’s degree is helpful, but not required.
  • 2 years in engineering, construction observation/inspection, utility construction, or related role.
  • Some combination of education and practical experience with consulting services, water, sewer, and stormwater utility operations or maintenance, construction inspection, construction management, construction, or other construction or civil or mechanical engineering related fields is needed to be successful in this role.
  • Experience interpreting engineering drawings and specifications is required.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, and Outlook) required.
  • Experience with engineering calculations and spreadsheet calculations preferred.
  • Experience with MS Project preferred.
  • Experience with Bluebeam or Adobe Acrobat preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Must be able to effectively coordinate multiple daily assignments including field inspections and other assignments with project managers, project owners, construction contractors, and other BHC project staff.
  • Must have sound organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively (both orally and in writing).
  • Must be able to occasionally work overtime to meet project deadlines.
  • Must be able to work independently and in teams.
  • Knowledge of current AWWA standards, International Building Codes, and other technical codes and standards is preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS

  • Washington State Driver’s License and insurable driving record required.
